Here is what's in store for you
Join this full-day wine tour and discover the fine wines produced in the Austrian wine regions close to Vienna!
Lower Austria is the cradle of Austrian viticulture, so this tour aims to make you discover the beautiful forests & vineyards of the Thermal Region, just south of Vienna. Home to traditionally quaint wine villages and unique local varietals, join us on one of the finest farm-to-table Austrian wine tours.
The tour is available daily in private form, while the small group tour is held on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The program differs slightly between the winter and summer seasons.
Summer program (April - October):
Meet your guide at 9:10 am at the main entrance of the Wien Mitte train station for initial introductions before boarding your train. Head to the U-Bahn station ‘Landstraße’ on the U3 orange or the U4 green lines.
After a 30-minute train journey south, you'll arrive in the lovely spa town of Baden, once a favorite country retreat of Beethoven. Here, you'll meander through the classic ‘Biedermeier’ village center and its gorgeous parks before entering the vineyard landscape. En route, you will hike to a wonderful lookout point, high above the canopy, overlooking the vineyards. You will then continue across the vineyards past lush green vines.
The walk ends in the picturesque and historic wine village of Gumpoldskirchen, where you will have the opportunity to replenish your energy at one of its traditional Austrian wine taverns (lunch not included).
After lunch, with full stomachs and endorphins surging through your bodies, it will be time for the highlight of the day, a wonderfully intimate, unhurried, and extensive wine tasting with one of the region’s finest vintners, where you’ll be able to ask questions about how wine is produced and get behind the scenes access to a local Austrian winery.
The tour ends with a short train ride back to the city center of Vienna, which you'll reach around 5:30 p.m. You’ll arrive at your hotel in time to freshen up before dinner, the opera, the theatre, or the concert! Whichever it is, we guarantee that you’ll sleep well that night!
Winter program (November - March):
Meet your guide at 9:40 a.m. at the main entrance of Wien Mitte train station for initial introductions before boarding your train. Head to the U-bahn station ‘Landstraße’ on the U3 orange or the U4 green lines.
Your train will bring you directly to the vineyards of the Thermal Region and seemingly right back into the Middle Ages in an ideal setting within the grounds of Austria’s second-oldest wine-making institution. During our first wine tasting, you’ll get an overview of Austrian wines, focusing on the main Thermal Region varieties. We’ll also learn how local monks became wine pioneers of their time, spreading their expertise across Europe and forming new wine regions as they went.
Next, you'll walk for around 20 minutes through the vineyards to one of Austria’s most historic wine-making villages, Gumpoldskirchen. Here you will stop for lunch at a traditional local ‘Heurige’ or wine tavern (lunch not included).
The highlight of the day will be the second wine tasting and your visit to a local winemaker in Gumpoldskirchen to taste the full range of regional varieties. This will be a wonderfully intimate, unhurried experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss all aspects of viticulture.
The tour ends with a short train ride back to Vienna, which you'll reach at around 5 p.m., giving you plenty of time to relax before your evening activities.
