About Winery and Wines
Our cellar door, the latest addition to the estate, is a testament to founder Marc Besen’s legacy. Built into the hillside, it’s another way for us to share the TarraWarra Estate experience. Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects and framed by stone from Castlemaine quarry, it’s the vineyard equivalent of Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole. Light filters through circular skylights into the elongated space, characterised by polished concrete floors and an extensive tasting bar made from the salvaged timber of St. Andrews pier. For $5 a person, guests are invited to sample TarraWarra Estate’s cool-climate bounty under the guidance of winemaker Clare Halloran (the amount is refundable with any bottle purchase made on the day). Towards the rear of the Cellar Door, a timber communal table seating 8 to 14 people can be turned into a private tasting room. Just beyond the glass door behind it is our working wine tunnel. Our Cellar Door exists to be enjoyed. Take your time, learn something and then sit back and enjoy a glass or bottle matched to a cheese board, charcuterie platter or head chef Troy Spencer’s ever-popular seasonal jaffle. Weather permitting; settle in on the deck shaded by native peppercorn trees.
