“Only few places in the world, such as Tenuta La Sabbiosa, keep vines that have been saved with their original rooting that allows to taste the pure and ancient flavour of the European grapes.” The winery in the dunes Tenuta La Sabbiosa rises in front of the Sardinian sea in the dunes of Sant’ Antioco Island, Italy. “An island of the island” that until the 80s was covered with vineyards of Carignano. Sapling vineyards bred up to the beaches, among the dunes and the junipers, on sandy land lashed by mistral. Pre-phylloxera vines because this is one of the few areas where the terrible plague of phylloxera has not taken root, destroying hundreds of years of human toil. A tradition however largely disappeared from the eighties due to low yields. Here and there, thanks to the passion and tenacity of the elderly, small centuries-old vineyards have survived. One of these started the production of “Tenuta La Sabbiosa” wines. In the field it comes with sulphur and copper, it is fertilized with manure and field bean, weeds are torn off manually or with the green manure technique, modern and sustainable organic farming practices have been included. Harvesting, which is strictly manual, takes place in the second half of September. Indeed, thanks to the cool mistral, extremely high temperatures are never reached in the vineyards and the grapes take longer to ripen to perfection. In the cellar it took years of tests and experiments to get the wine the owners wanted. “We looked for the essence of Carignano, we wanted to go back to the enhancement of grapes, its aromas, its flavours, its natural flavour. We have reduced processing and stabilization to a minimum. We wanted a wine that came from the land and not from winemaking techniques that still remain precious allies to produce high quality wines. Only in this way, with a hint of madness, fighting against the mistral on sandy soils we have transformed an ancient vine into a modern one."
