Livio Felluga
(Weingut in Friaul-Venetien)

In Friuli, and far beyond this special land of very special people and wines, the name Livio Felluga is synonymous with all that is best in the oenological heritage. The long family tradition extends over five generations, back to the days when the Fellugas were making Refosco and Malvasia in their native Isola d’Istria. Seventy years ago, the family’s skills were transferred to Friuli by the eldest son of the fourth generation, Livio, whose great privilege it is to be regarded as the patriarch of viticulture and winemaking in the region. In the 1950s, Livio set up the cellar at Brazzano, sealing his love for the hill country with the far-sighted purchase of the first Felluga vineyards at Rosazzo. It was a success destined to endure, thanks to Livio’s absolute, and at times obstinate, dedication to the land. He knows every step of his estate. He lives and breathes the land, because over the years his patience and determination have shaped it with a gentle hand, shunning aggressive intervention to coax out the best the soil can give. Rosazzo bears witness to this. Today, the Livio Felluga estate extends over more than 160 hectares of hill country in the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli, with 155 hectares planted to vine. The vineyards yield exclusively great wines with instantly recognisable fragrances and aromas. These are the map label wines.

The San Floriano village, with its 276 meters above sea level, is the highest peak of the hill area over the city of Gorizia, cut in two parts by the border between Italy and Slovenia, called Collio (or Brda on the Slovene side). Its geographical position is an extremely rare and vital example of microclimate, with cold winds from Russia coming down through the Vipava and Isonzo valleys, and, on the other side, wet and hot winds gently blowing from the Mediterranean Sea. On the back, as a solid shoulder, the protection of the Alps. This climatic and geographic factors together with the mineral-rich soil of hard sands and softer silt called Ponka by the locals, form an especially good place for wine-growing, formerly discovered by ancient Romans.

Castello di Rubbia
(Weingut in Friaul-Venetien)

The Castle of Rubbia was founded at the end of the 90s as wine tourism project. The business began once again the old tradition of wine making which had been started in the 16th century by the Counts of Egg. The estate lies in San Michele del Carso in the province of Gorizia. It has a vineyard with 13 hectares and the historic castle which is being restored. It is surrounded by 170 hectares of woodland and 16 kilometres of trenches and underground embrasures from the First World War. The Castle of Rubbia has decided to make the most of the native vines of the Carso, such as Terrano, Vitovska and Malvasia which best represent the distinctiveness and characteristics of the area. The characteristic red soil, the product of a geological phenomenon called Carso, is rich in iron and lime. Here drought alternates with the local wind, the Bora, and the vines give us grapes from which we make dry, full-bodied wines, which have complemented the local gastronomy for centuries.

Casali Magnis
(Weingut in Friaul-Venetien)
