Fattoria dei Barbi
(Weingut in Siena)
The Cantina dei Barbi, with its 300 wooden wine barrels and thousands of bottles of Brunello laid down for aging, has been open to the public for more than fifty years. During this time more than a million and a half wine lovers have visited our cellars, admiring the collection of bottles that date from 1870 to the present day, bearing witness to a continuity that makes Barbi unique in Italy.
The Brunello produced by Fattoria dei Barbi has won prizes all over Europe since the late nineteenth century, and still today all over the world.
The Fattoria has always been a careful custodian of tradition, but also attentive to innovation and a pioneer in every sphere of winemaking. It was the first firm in Montalcino to export bottled wine to France (1817), the first to sell Brunello by mail order (1832), the first to export it to America (1962), England (1969) and Japan (1975). It created the first “Super Tuscan” (Brusco dei Barbi, 1969) and the first single-varietal grappa (Grappa di Bruennlo, 1974). In the 1960s the estate was a pioneer in using organic fertilizers, in the 1990s it created the first “artificial nose” for analyzing wine, and in 2000 was one of the first to use carbon dioxide for cold fermentation of red wines.
The current annual production is about 800,000 bottles, of which more than 200,000 are Brunello. The 66 hectares of the farm have an average density of about 5,000 vines and produce on the average less than 1.5 kg of grapes per vine; thus each vine produces only a little more than one bottle of wine. The philosophy of the Colombini family and the Fattoria dei Barbi has always been to know and study the most innovative technology and then wed it to the best tradition, so as to improve everything we produce without ever changing its distinguishing characteristics.
Podere Le Ripi
(Weingut in Siena)
With breathtaking views and pure air.
A long time ago, in 1984, I fell in love with Montalcino. I am a nature photographer and these views, that – like our poet Ungaretti said – enlighten me of immense, just stole my soul: I had to have a house here!
So in 1987 I begun searching for my Tuscan “mansion” without even thinking I would produce some wine: I was a wine lover but I thought I would be too old to enter this incredibly long learning curve.
Every proposal was too big, or too expensive or not suitable… so it took ten years before my friend Carlo Vittori called me again and told me that he had found a place. And, recalling his words…how right he was!
I arrived from Switzerland (I used to live there) after a six hours drive to see this shepherd under a centenary Oak taking his afternoon nap with his sheep bleating and ruminating around him and the big white Maremmano dogs running in circle to keep them at spot. (Two of them, mother and daughter, where so wild that they remained with me: he wasn’t able to load them on his truck when he left. And when I asked him a few months later what to do with those dogs, he candidly told me with his Sardinian accent to shoot them, which I obviously never did.)
So I immediately understood that this was my place. The place of my life. The beauty, the distance from what, living there, we call “civilization”, the absolute absence of the horrible architectural slaughter of the last century that has destroyed so many Italian landscapes, the perfumes that pervade all year long this hills, the deep view on the east to Monticchiello… and Montepulciano, the prehistoric volcano Monte Amiata on the south, the near amphitheatric hills protecting Le Ripi on the west and north… all this was so wonderful…
Azienda Agraria Crocedimezzo
(Weingut in Siena)
The farm belongs to Barbara and Roberto Nannetti, together with their mother Fiorella Vannoni and has a total surface of 32 hectares, 4,5 of which are vineyard. It produces Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G., Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C., table wine, olive oil, Grappa of Brunello, Rosolio ai Petali di Rosa and honey.
The dedication that comes with a family business gives special results, from the work in the vineyard before, during and after a vinification process that is carefully monitored in all its phases.
Azienda vitivinicola TIezzi
(Weingut in Siena)
The noble origins of Podere Soccorso are linked to the life of one of the family’s ancestors, Prof. Riccardo Paccagnini, who has recently been described as “a pioneer of Brunello” and was one of the first winemakers from Montalcino to become involved in the sales of this wine. It was here, in fact, that in 1870, the first wine to bear the “Brunello” label was created, obtaining important acknowledgements in Rome, Paris, Marseille and Bordeaux. Numerous certificates, medals and prizes were awarded to Brunello Soccorso in the 1800s, all of which have been kept by the estate, being historical documents of fundamental importance.
Az. Agr. Uccelliera Di Cortonesi Andrea
(Weingut in Siena)
In Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where my family verwurzelt is and always with the work on the country and was connected for the village, I could acquire at the end of of 1986 a farmhouse with property and continue with it this tradition. The natural suitability of this soil for the cultivation of wine and olivenbaeumen as well as my business spirit me difficult moments helped to overcome. The acquisition I began right after to make important changes in order to transform the possession into predominantly the viticulture dedicated an agriculture enterprise. I maintained the original name "Uccelliera" (bird house). Although the emphasis of the yard should be the viticulture, the olivenbaeume, which framed the farmhouse, stand calmly from respect for these several hundred years old plants. Growing and prospering the yard led to an expansion of the viticulture. Under careful retaining of the characteristic characteristics of building and environment the property house was reconditioned. In order to become fair the need according to the new functional premises for the wine preparing, development and storage to change the existing buildings made a cellar under without the characteristic of the place.
Azienda Talenti
(Weingut in Siena)

La Fornace Brunello
(Weingut in Siena)
La Fornace is a small family-owned company of about 7 HA including 2 hectares of olive groves and 4.5 HAS ALL enrolled in Brunello di Montalcino. The Furnace has this particular name because in 1490, was founded as a brick kiln. A small presentation of the Giannetti family: his grandfather Joseph in 1964 bought the furnace after a life as a sharecropper of the church and many sacrifices. At first they were only 2 HA with a small vineyard ½ HA. Grandfather Joseph came from generations of farmers and producers of wine and oil, but as they did in those days small producers not your own wine bottled, but sold it to the larger wineries. In 1975, the Franco father and mother Germana have had the opportunity to buy more land near where they implanted other vineyards, but only in 1987 with the Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino 1988, they started to bottle. My Parents are left with 1,000 bottles of wine by type, we now have 4.5 hectares and produce about 18,000 bottles in the best years even if the company could produce about 30,000 bottles, but we prefer to always seek the highest quality without compromise. In 1998, my parents decided it was time to start another adventure as they left the reins of the company to Fabio, the son. The Furnace follows the rules of nature for its own products trying to limit as much as possible any external agent and polluting and to respect the natural course of the seasons and the passing of time, so all the most important works for the production of wine are made by the expert hands of our family.
