Über das Weingut und die Weine

The familial origins lie in the Marches, coming from the Veneto region, and date back as far as the thirteenth century. The paternal grandfather, Tebaldo, was a landowner and veterinarian. The maternal grandfather, Girolamo Piccinini, an important silk businessman, was awarded the prestigious “Cavaliere del Lavoro” title in 1904 and was one of the first recipients of this honour. Piccinini subsequently wed the marchioness Eleonora Benigni Olivieri di Capo d’Acqua (1865-1966), who was a relation of both HH pope Pio IV MASTAI Ferretti (1792-1878) and of HH pope Pio VIII Castiglioni (1796-1830). The ethos of “Il Pollenza” includes a sincere passion for the land and a steady commitment to the best cultivation techniques, as well as high quality standards for wine-production. These factors have shaped both the method and produce of “Il Pollenza”. “Il Pollenza” located in Tolentino, was bought by count Brachetti-Peretti more than twenty years ago from the house of Antici Mattei. The beautiful 16th century building was designed by Sangallo and rises up amid the gorgeous landscape of Macerata hills. The estate spans around 220 hectares, 70 of which are occupied by the vineyard.

The vineyards are situated inside the “il Pollenza” estate, which is 25 km from the coast and 35 km from the Sybilline Mountains. The vines are arranged at different heights, varying between 110 to 150 metres above sea level. Within the vineyard, one can find internationally renowned grape varieties like, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc; as well as local varieties including, Ribbona, Trebbiano, Sangiovese and Maceratino. The first international vines date back to 1996, while the native vines go back more than 40 years. Harvesting takes place between the end of August and mid-September. Grapes are primarily harvested by hand and put in wooden crates, though this is supplemented by machinery equipped with the latest technologies. On the whole the use of machinery is kept to a minimum, as harvesting by hand is favoured. The soil depth ranges from medium to deep and is comprised of a medium mixture, tending to clayish and pebbly in part. A vertical trellising system is used throughout the vineyard. With regard to pruning, the spurred cordon method is used for the red grapes, whilst the guyot pruning method is applied to the white vines. The vinicultural technician is Dr. Giovanni Campodonico, who is supported by Dr. Valerio Barbieri.
