Azienda Agricola Ausonia

Winery Ausonia is located in Abruzzo, on the “Teramane hills”, an area with denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin (DOCG). It consists of 14 hectares of vineyard, about 400 olive trees. We have only autoctonal vineyards: Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo Pecorino, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.The entire company, consisting of a single structure, is located at 270 s.l.m protected to the West from Gran Sasso mountains and exposed to the East to the positive effects of Adriatic Sea.The hillside location offers a ventilated climate, dry, with good temperature changes between day and night; this is an optimal condition for growing vines. The soil is mostly clay with a good component of silt.The vineyards are planted in rows, except for Trebbiano, that grows in Abruzzo’s pergola, with plants about 30 years old. The company applies an attentive eco-sustainability viticulture and during the 2013 has started the organic certification process. Since 2016 we are Organic and Biodynamic certified.The winery is surrounded by vineyards, and it’s equipped with the latest technologies for the vinification of the grapes, for the refining and storage of wine, remaining firmly convinced that a great wine requires grapes of high quality and a great human commitment. The philosophy of low environmental impact has also inspired the construction of the winery, built on two levels, there it is possible to move the wine without the use of pumps; two underground areas are realized for the aging of the wine. The cellar, consists of 2 basements for aging and storing wine. The structure has been fully insulated and equipped with a wooden roof that recovers rainwater in a tank of 200 cubic meters to be used during the summer. Even the name Ausonia contains a little story. To give the idea for the name was Simone’s father, an entomologist for passion and real engineof this adventure. Walking in the company during the spring , he immediately noticed the flight of this beautiful butterfly. Ausonia is in fact the name of a butterfly quite rare in Italy, but very present among the gullies along the company and the Regional Natural Reserve of Atri Badlands, where he found his natural habitat. From this is derived the choice to call the wines with the names of the butterflies of the Abruzzo region.

We have only autoctonal vineyards: Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo Pecorino, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The production comes exclusively from our grapes, the only way to have strict control over the quality of grapes. We follow the Demeter disciplinar to produce our wines with spontaneous fermentations no filtration or clarification. The names of wines, as the company name (Ausonia), are names of butterflies living in Abruzzo.
