Celler del Vino Carlón, S.L.
Sobre la Bodega
Carlón wine has a rich history dating back to the 15th century, when its wines were renowned throughout the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Chroniclers such as Viciana, as early as 1562, as well as Cabanilles and others, highlighted the quality of Benicarló's red and white wines. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Carlón wine was highly prized for its color, strength, and ability to withstand long voyages. We exported large quantities to countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia, and Brazil. Benicarló wines were described as strong, full-bodied, and deeply colored—qualities that made them ideal for trade.
Unfortunately, at the end of the 19th century, phylloxera and a preference for quantity over quality led to the decline of Carlón Wine's reputation.
In 2012, a group of people with a passion for history and wine decided to undertake the revival of Carlón Wine. This group, the Carlón Wine Growers Association (AVVC), with the support of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, spearheaded a scientific project for the characterization and testing of different grape varieties.
Sobre los Vinos
Our goal is to revive the wines that were once so renowned. We work with red varieties such as Garnacha Tinta, Samsó, and Syrah; and white varieties such as Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo. Our philosophy is to combine traditional methods with sustainable practices, using only animal-based fertilizers. We harvest by hand, ferment with wild yeasts from the region, and minimize intervention.
The result is wines with soul, expressing the unique character of the land and the passion of those who craft them.
