Sobre la bodega y los vinos
The Bergqvist family have been making port since 1815. Quinta de Ia Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feuheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist family were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de Ia Rosa’s red wine has won many accolades in the press and is sold in many prestiguous restaurants and wine stores around the world. For the last 5 years, the Bergqvist family has also been making their Vale da Clara wine, buying in carefully selected grapes from nearby properties. The wine differs distinctly from the La Rosa wine produced - it has more fruit and less oak flavours. We started offering accommodation on the quinta in the 1980s with firstly Quinta Amarela and then in the 1990s with Quinta de Lamelas. Bed and Breakfast accommodation was also added and in 2012 we underwent an expansion project adding an additional 7 rooms. The demarcated Douro port and DOC wine region is found in Northen Portugal, inland from Porto. It extends along the Douro River and its tributaries up to Barca d’Alva and bordering the districts of Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda and Viseu. A little further inland into Spain you find the famous Ribeira de Duero wine area. The mountain ranges of the Marão, Alvão and Montemuro protect the region from the Atlantic influences.
