Great experience with the producers

1/1/24
It was really great. I’ve been there with my family and was warm welcomed by Ivan and Luciano. We’ve learned about the region, how the grapes are produced and a little bit about the process. I didn’t have any idea about how to produce wines in details and most of the doubts were answered. In the end, we had a chance to taste 5 different wines, starting with Montalcino Rosso and then with the Brunello’s family. It was really great and, of course, I had a chance to buy some bottles of Brunellos! Recommend a lot, specially because we’ve paid for the visit a lower price than in the Fontezza, but with a better experience, straight from the producers.
Maintain the same humble hospitality. This make the difference with a kind of familiar approach.

À propos du vignoble et des vins

The spirit of Sanlorenzo resides in the dreams that gave you life and make you grow, every day. Sanlorenzo is pure tradition, the characteristics of Montalcino and its famous Brunello, but it is also technology, research and experimentation.

Most of all, Sanlorenzo is authenticity and respect for hard work. The awareness of its values is expressed in the great wines it produces and in the simplicity of the people, which creates trust. Sanlorenzo is an open outlook towards the future.

It was in the late 19th century when Lorenzo Ferretti, who lived in a farmhouse in the hills to the South-West of Montalcino, decided to buy some land where he could build a house. The place was called Rogarelli, and it was here that he started his family; he had 7 children, including Guido. Guido Ferretti married Teresina Caselli and they had two children; Bramante and Giovanni.

His 7 children, and his grandchildren continued to live at Rogarelli but the farmhouse was too small for them all and so in 1950 Guido and his family decided to purchase another piece of land and to establish their farm, they bought some land that bordered Rogarella from the Argiano estate. When it came to giving it a name, they decided to call it Sanlorenzo in memory of their grandfather.

Guido died in 1960 and his youngest son decided to move away from Montalcino to go and live in Siena and work in a factory. Bramante and his wife, Adele, in spite of having two daughters (Gigliola and Fiorella), took over the farm and its workload as they did not want to leave. At that time it was a strong decision because it was the time when many were leaving the countryside to go and live in the cities. Furthermore Sanlorenzo and this area of Montalcino was extremely poor and life was hard.

At that time, viticulture was solely for family use, they had about a hectare of vineyards mixed with olive trees and they produced some wine for their home; their livelihood came from the production of firewood, from rearing pigs, cows and sheep, as well as farmyard animals such as chickens and rabbits.

In 1972, Fiorella married Paolo Ciolfi from Val d’Orcia, thereby giving fresh impetus to Sanlorenzo, they decided to focus on rearing livestock and built a modern barn, but at the same time they began planting a modern vineyard, one in 1972 and another in 1992, but the grape production was sold to other wineries.
Paolo and Fiorella had three children; Luciano, Luciana and Luca. After completing their studies, Luciano and Luciana went their separate ways; the former going to work for a winery in Montalcino, and Luciana got married and moved to Cinigiano. In 1997, Luciano, in the euphoria surrounding the boom in Montalcino and Brunello, returned to work at Sanlorenzo, deciding to take it down what seemed to be the best road; that of wine production.
Five hectares of new vineyards were planted, the farm closed in 2000 and it began to operate as a winery. The first year to be produced was 2003.
Bramante died in 2016, by now 101 years and six months old, and in the same year Luciana returned to take her place at Sanlorenzo.

The sun rises early that day,
and sets late for the grape pickers at Sanlorenzo,
but in the end, everyone, even the vines,
will have their deserved,
if short lived, rest.

Brunello di Montalcino

It is vinified in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature and then aged in wooden barrels . After bottling the wine ages 4 months before it is released on the market.

After five years  has a great variety in its bouquet and an unique combination of tastes that unveil with great effect. The colour is dark garnet red, the wine’s bouquet is generous with hints of dry flowers, spices and ripe fruit.
The wine has a great structure, good tannins of perfect extraction and a long finish. This Brunello is best paired with game, Fiorentina and Tagliata steak and aged pecorino cheese.

Rosso di Montalcino

Vinified in steel tanks, it is subsequently aged in “old” barriques of various sizes in order to achieve an optimal balance. A further refinement in the bottle completes the cellar work to bring a fruity wine with an important structure into the glass.

The fresh aromas of ripe cherry and the pleasant hints of wood in the background make it balanced and elegant on the palate, giving it a particular taste that sets it apart. This wine goes very well with all red meat dishes and cheeses, red and cheeses.

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Bramante

In memory of my grandfather, Bramante Ferretti, Sanlorenzo’s founder, who was born and lived in Montalcino.
3 May 1915 – 29 October 2016 The Riserva di Brunello di Montalcino Bramante only comes in exceptional years from a selection of the best grapes. Aged for more than two years in medium-sized wooden casks, it is bottled in its fourth year and left to rest in the bottle until the January of the sixth year after it is harvested.

Rosato IGT Toscana

Produced in small quantities from Sangiovese grapes. Cheerful colour, onion of Tropea With a “cold” type nose, with some green notes, but what emerges is fruity cherry accompanied by sensations of other red fruits. Extremely pleasant on the tongue, with a rich and intense mouthfeel, with a nice acidity. Freshness that persists in the long finish.
