Cantina e Vini

Since 1771, Bodegas Los Frailes has belonged to the family Velazquez without any interruption. The winery was formerly a property of the Jesuits friars who were expelled from Spain in the Confiscation of 1767 by King Carlos III of Spain. Four years later a written manuscript reveals that our ancestors acquired in public auction the house, lands and cellar known as “ Casa Los Frailes”- Friar house. Keeping our roots, we are committed to produce wines that reflect the character of our terroir. In 1999 Bodegas Los Frailes undertook an ambitious project. First, a reorganisation of the vineyards bringing the utmost of our indigenous variety, Monastrell (with vineyards of more than 40 years old). Second, returning to the traditional agriculture, we reconverted the whole production to organic farming methods. And third, we carried out an important modernization of the old cellar and the construction of 3 new ones including a bottling plant. The result is a range of exceptional wines with very unique personalities and great quality. Bodegas Los Frailes winery is a surprising combination of tradition and modernity. Our winery covers an area of 10.000 m2. There is an old buried cellar built before the century XVIII and a new cellar built in 2000 with the most state-of-the-art technology vinification process. In 2006 we have just finished a barrel hall with capacity for 600 barrels and a new bottling plant with the most advantages technologies.

Bodegas Los Frailes Estate occupies over 130 hectares of terrain located in the valley ‘Els Alforins’. Our main grape variety is the Monastrell, a variety traditionally planted in ‘Els Alforins’ region, which was partially lost during the last century as a consequence of the growth of more popular varieties (e.g Cabernet Sauvignon). Our main goal is the reintroduction of the Monastrell combined with the incorporation of new varieties( Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Maselan, Shiraz, Garnacha) to raise the unique personality of our wines. 60% of the estate is planted with Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and the other 20% compounded by Tempranillo, Marselan, Shiraz, Garnacha. We have a wide variety of soils spread out on hillsides, ranging in altitude from a maximum 800 meters down to the bottom of the valley. The average age of the vineyards is over 25 years old, including vineyards of Monastrell variety with more than 40 years old.
