In the history of Navarre wine , Olite, a town located in the region known as Ribera Alta, has always played an important role. Nine centuries have passed since Teobaldo I, Count of Champagne, planted his first vines after having discovered the richness of the land and its favourable climatic conditions. This paved the way for local vine growers, even up to today. Later, Charles III, “The Noble”, strengthened the wine culture even further on establishing his court in Olite. The vineyards multiplied, and with time came to supply wine throughout his entire kingdom. Once the Navarre phylloxera crisis of 1896 had passed, Don Victoriano Flamarique founded the first cooperative winery in 1910, giving it the name ‘ Bodega Cooperativa Olitense' . It has always remained faithful to our fine winemaking tradition, which, along with changes resulting from scientific and technological advances, has raised Navarre wines to even greater levels of prestige. The Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen ‘Navarre' (The Regulatory Council for the ‘Navarre' Denominación de Origen ) the Estación de Viticultura y Enología de Navarre (EVENA) (The Navarre Viticulture and Oenology Station) and the Wine Museum are all found in Olite, making it the economic, scientific and cultural centre of Navarre wine. The Vega del Castillo wineries came into being in 1999 as a result of the merger between the Bodega Cooperativa Olitense (Olite), the Unión de Cooperativas Virgen de Ujué (Ujué), and the Cooperativa Vinícola Nuestra Señora de Ujué (Pitillas).
