Cantina e Vini

Finca Antigua was “Love at First Sight” for Familia Martínez Bujanda. With the decision to diversify the original Rioja winery business, they combed the country of Spain in search of singular vineyards with personality. Until they reached an extreme site for vine growing that, far from the traditional and uniform extensions of La Mancha, this estate offered extraordinary possibilities to innovate in the elaboration of wine. Finca Antigua, whose name refers to the many old vineyards planted when the estate was bought, is an extension of 1,000 hectares with an altitude over 900 meters, of which only 421 are vineyards; the rest is shrub land with holm oaks. To reconvert the estate was a technically difficult in classifying everything, and identifying plots which ultimately ended with the planting of new varieties with a larger potential of adapting to the soil as well as keeping the ones which were able to recover from the scars of erosion. Familia Martínez Bujanda acquired Finca Antigua at the beginning of 1999 and opened the new winery in 2003. Finca Antigua gathers the best of the old and new worlds, with a surprising collection of wines which are creative, innovative and that express the personality of the land where they are grown.

Finca Antigua is divided into 40 plots, where the different grapes of our wide varietal catalogue are grown and harvested separately. They include the national range of Viura, Garnacha, Tempranillo and Moscatel, and the international range of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Syrah, that we elaborate for our creative and avant-garde single-variety wines, now of Crianza category. Finca Antigua Crianza and Finca Antigua Reserva are two wines that combine the style, fusion and possibilities of the estate. They are the result of the blends of several plots, the same every year and that are a step forward in the winery creativity. Pico Garbanzo is something special; a wonderful site of barely four hectares where we can find a “disordered” varietal mix, even atypical (Garnacha, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Mazuelo…) that, planted in a particular clay soil, produced our Clavis, a special and surprising wine able to express the shrub-land landscape where the vineyards take root. The Finca Antigua soils, as a general rule, have a calcareous character, and are poor in organic material. This fact, together with the high altitude of the estate, 900 meters – one of the coldest areas of La Mancha, allows us to elaborate singular and innovative wines that express the personality of the terroir with the elegance, freshness and storage capacity that only extreme viticulture can offer.
