Langhe & Roero UNESCO SITE wine tour
Here is what you will live
Enjoy a special day with a unique wine tour in the Langhe & Roero destination, a stunning Unesco heritage site.
Departing from Milan, the Langhe & Roero destination is 2 hours drive, therefore our suggested departure time will be 8 am.
Your first winery will be Cascina Chicco. The winery has been making wines in the Roero for three generations since founder Ernesto Faccenda planted vineyards of Nebbiolo and Barbera in the 1950s. In the 1980s, Enrico’s son Federico modernized the winery, and today, he and his sons Enrico and Marco work together to produce wines of great quality.
They expanded production by selecting land that best expresses the unique characteristics of native grape varieties, and now their vineyards extend from Roero to Barolo territory. Their wines range from white Roero Arneis and Favorita to red Barbera, Nebbiolo-based Roero DOCG, and Barolo. They always strive to produce high quality, traditional wines and to strengthen the family traditions that have made Cascina Chicco a leader in the Roero subzone. The winery has recently been renovated, featuring an extensive wine cellar excavated under the original farmhouse and vineyards. It is a labyrinth of barrel and aging rooms, corridors for storage and wine racks, and niches excavated into bare rock for conserving historical vintages. At its center lies the heart and soul of the wine cellar: The Wheel Room. Designed with a dozen arches and topped with a cupola which represents the wheel of the Roero, the symbol of the medieval lords who ruled these lands.
Cascina Chicco will welcome you to its new tasting room. An ample location, artfully restored, where the history of the winery is suffused. The wine counter is the same that Ernesto and Federico Faccenda used in the family delicatessen, along with the legendary hand crank Berkel slicers. From the tasting room, you will go down and visit the cellar.
Over 5000 square metres that descend 28 metres deep under the hill, divided into separate areas for ageing, barriques, tasting room, storehouse, and crutins (small cellars) dug by hand in the naked rock. The new cellar of Cascina Chicco fosters a unique and welcoming environment, where technology and tradition live in conviviality in a spectacular underground facility that displays original bricks and outcrops of chalk crystals. A tribute to the extraordinary land of Roero and its wines. At the end, tasting of:
- Roero Arneis Docg Anterisio 2017
- Barbera d’Alba Doc Granera Alta 2016
- Barolo Docg Rocche di Castelletto 2014
Then you'll go to Neive for a special light lunch in a local Typical Osteria and finally, on your way back to Milan, you'll visit Coppo Winery. This winery transports you through time. The underground tunnels, which are known as Cathedrals and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcase the long history of winemaking in the area. Historic farming and winemaking tools are displayed at the entrance and important vintages are displayed in small dug outs.
You will pass through the fermentation rooms of Coppo Chardonnay, vinified pure and as a still wine destined for whites with great mineral complexity. You will visit the fermentation rooms of Pinot Noir, which along with Chardonnay becomes the base cuvée of Coppo sparkling wines. You will pass through the tunnels where Coppo Barbera ages and learn how the family contributed to this variety’s rebirth in an important way. You will see where Coppo sparkling Riserva Metodo Classico rests and will get to learn the techniques used in making our sparkling wines.
The guided visit to the Underground Cathedrals ends with a tasting of 4 different wines that best represent Coppo winery:
- Luigi Coppo Spumante Brut Metodo Classico
- Costebianche Piemonte DOC Chardonnay
- Camp du Rouss Barbera d’Asti DOCG
- Moncalvina Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli
