Small Group Peza Valley Wine Tour from Heraklion: 2 Wineries & Lunch
Here is what's in store for you
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the Cretan countryside, passing by the legendary Palace of Knossos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Built on the hill of Kefala, Knossos was the heart of the Minoan civilization and is deeply connected to the myths of King Minos, the Labyrinth, the Minotaur, and the story of Daedalus and Icarus. As you pass by this iconic landmark, your guide will introduce its historical and mythological significance, setting the tone for a day shaped by Crete’s rich past and living traditions.
Continuing inland, you arrive in the Peza Valley, one of Crete’s most important wine-growing regions. Your first winery visit is to a family-run estate surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. During the guided tour, you’ll explore the cellar and production areas while learning about organic winemaking practices and indigenous grape varieties that have shaped Cretan wine for centuries. The visit concludes with a guided tasting of carefully selected wines, offering a first introduction to the region’s terroir and distinctive styles.
The journey then continues through picturesque villages and olive groves toward another historic winery in the Peza Valley. During your visit, you’ll walk through the winery and cellar, gain insight into the production process, and enjoy a tasting of a range of wines crafted from local grape varieties. The experience is interactive and welcoming, offering the opportunity to engage directly with knowledgeable hosts who are deeply connected to their craft.
After the winery visits, you head to the village of Archanes, one of Crete’s most charming and vibrant settlements, located at the foot of Mount Giouhtas. In the heart of the village, you’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch at a well-known local taverna set in a leafy square filled with flowers and shaded by tall trees. The meal reflects the essence of Cretan hospitality and includes a selection of traditional dishes, from fresh salads and starters to a main course and dessert, all prepared with local ingredients. A glass of wine, water, and a small carafe of raki accompany the meal, while an adjacent shop offers the chance to sample local products such as olive oil, honey, and handmade marmalades.
Following lunch, you enjoy a comfortable return drive to your accommodation, bringing the day to a close with a deeper appreciation for Crete’s history, wine culture, and village life.
