More information on Aosta Valley

Valle d'Aosta is Italy's smallest region, with only about 3000 square kilometers. This valley (in Italian Valle), located on the border with France and Switzerland, winds from west to east and is surrounded by some of Italy's highest mounts, like the Mont Blanc, the Monte Rosa and the Gran Paradiso. The Aosta Valleyis not only a great destination for winter sports lovers but also wine lovers who want to learn more about the region's excellent wines during wine tastings and winery visits surrounded by scenic green valleys and fairytale castles.

Viticulture in the Aosta Valley is concentrated in an area of about 400 hectares, the majority of which are situated in its mountainous area. This means that during your wine tastings in the Aosta Valley you will taste examples of a regional production oriented towards quality rather than quantity. To date, in the Aosta Valley are present six cooperative wineries and about forty private wineries. Despite the size of the region, Valle d'Aosta boasts one DOC appellation, the Valle d'Aosta or Vallée d'Aoste DOC.

Which wines to taste in Aosta Valley?

During your time in the Aosta Valley, your wine tastings will mostly include wines made with native vine varieties. This is because the high altitudes and harsh temperatures wouldn't allow non-local species to survive. The local black grape varieties include Petit Rouge, Prëmetta and Fumin amongst others, while some white grape varieties that can be found are Petite Arvine and Prié blanc.

Which is the best season to visit Aosta Valley?

The most popular seasons to visit the Aosta Valley are either winter, from the Christmas period up to mid-March, or summer, especially in July and August. Of course, if you'd like to combine winery tours and wine tastings in the valley with a ski trip, then we recommend visiting during winter. Summers are instead recommended for travelers who prefer enjoying walks, hikes and wine tours when the valleys are greener and the weather is more pleasant.
