Maori Point Vineyard LtdWe are John Harris, Marilyn Duxson, Matt Evans, and Maggie Evans. We are also the friends and family who contribute so much to Maori Point. We are passionate about this land and all of the animals, plants, fungi and microbes that inhabit it. We planted Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in 2002, and although we may give some special attention to the grapevines, they are nonetheless merely part of the larger ecosystem. Located In the heart of Central Otago. Halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka, on the bank of the Clutha River at Tarras, Maori Point is surrounded by mountains, snow-covered in winter (and often through summer). The area is usually cloud-free and dry. The southern boundary of our vineyard is sheltered by pine trees but the nor-west wind can funnel between the mountain ranges and sweep across the vineyard. Our soil is wind-blown loess over deep deposits of large boulders dumped at the foot of the Hawea glacier, 10,000 years ago. Since then, little has grown in this arid environment. We are changing that, both through our grapevines (which unlike most crops can thrive in this free-draining, low-organic content soil) and through our plantings of native vegetation. We practice careful viticulture and management of the land. We believe that each grapevine has a story, and we laboriously hand-tend each vine to help it tell that story. Flowers and aromatic plants are grown between the vine rows and then mown and mulched under the vines, to create a beneficial ecosystem and nutrition for the vines. These practices have made an enormous difference: in just a few years our vines have found balance, and the soil in the vine rows has changed colour from pale sand to dark loam. Meanwhile, our native vegetation is thriving, and our honeybees can be found buzzing throughout the property.

Jurassic RidgeJurassic Ridge is a small family-established and owned vineyard and winery situated in historic Church Bay (Hangaura) on the western end of Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Our vineyard sits just above the site of one of the earliest missionary churches in Auckland, and enjoys expansive views over the Bay, the Hauraki Gulf islands and the Auckland city skyline, just 35 minutes away by fast ferry. Whilst the original meaning of the name Hangaura has been lost, the literal translation of hanga is ‘to make’, while ura – right across Polynesia – is ‘red’. The perfect place to make red wine! Why Jurassic Ridge?' - or, 'Where did you get the name?' Well - the vineyard is named for its terroir - specifically, its geological terroir. A major study has shown the critical importance of the type of rock beneath the vineyard. Our vines are planted over the exposed core of an ancient mountain ridge composed of 155 million year old rock formations (ie from the Late or Upper Jurassic period). in fact the centre of our vineyard sits precisely on the ridge line of the mountain that was once almost 3000m high. The sedimentary rock strata beneath the vineyard consists of greywacke sandstones, mudstones and argillites, interbedded with those mysterious rocks called cherts (ask me about them) and injected here and there with submarine basaltic pillow lavas. These rocks gradually weather and break down into our low fertility, stony, cracking clay soils, rich in iron oxides, manganese and magnesium from the ancient volcanic intrusions.

These two traits can be found in every bottle of Lawson’s Dry Hills wine – wonderful, top quality fruit from our carefully nurtured vineyards transformed into imminently drinkable wines using modern winemaking techniques. The original company vineyard was planted in 1980 by Ross and Barbara Lawson, who launched the Lawson’s Dry Hills label some twelve years later, in 1992. Today, the company’s wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and our famous Gewurztraminer, all made from fruit grown in Wairau, Waihopai, Omaka and Awatere Valleys. These different regions and carefully selected vineyard sites provide varying characteristics derived from the different soils and microclimates, giving many options when it comes to blending to that much-anticipated Lawson’s style. The dedicated bunch of people that make up our small team at Lawson’s Dry Hills are very ‘hands on’, living and breathing every part of the viticultural and winemaking process. We do a lot of talking and tasting before pouring our shared inspiration into every bottle. The resulting wines offer an authentic expression of the place and the grape variety they are made from together with a certain special something that we believe can only come from passion. It would seem that the combination of elements that go into each of our wines is a winning formula. We have lost count of all our gold medals – the certificates cover the walls in our cellar door while the shelves are buckling with the weight of all our trophies – both local and overseas. But actually we’re not ones to boast so that’s enough of that. We’d rather roll our sleeves up and get stuck in to making the best wines possible, after all, that’s what we dream of, talk about and well, it’s actually what we do.
