More information on Tuscany

In the last 30 years, Tuscany has become the preferred destination for wine lovers who want to experience the quintessential Italian lifestyle immersed in art and architecture from the Renaissance, and at the same time taste some of Italy's most historical wines, such as Brunello, Chianti and Vino Nobile. Tuscany stands out compared to other Italian regions thanks to its diversified portfolio of wineries offering tasting rooms, winery tours, and, of course, various wine tastings in suggestive settings. Tuscany's success has also contributed to building a very diversified choice of activities. From winery visits to truffle hunts to cooking classes, Tuscany has even become a very popular wedding location for foreigners.

During your wine tastings and winery visits in Tuscany, you will learn how winemaking is tightly linked with the region's history and culture. Viticulture in Tuscany started with the Etruscans and developed through the centuries. Here, making wine was never considered just a humble agricultural activity. In fact, the noble families of the area were always directly involved in the cultivation and production processes. The Tuscans' pride and passion for wine led to obtaining 41 DOC, 11 DOCG and 6 IGT appellations over time.

Which food to taste in Tuscany?

Tuscany offers a multitude of typical products and dishes which you'll be able to enjoy between a wine tasting and a winery visit. Some of the most iconic dishes we recommend trying are: Crostini di fegato, pappardelle with wild boar, Pappa al Pomodoro, Ribollita, Fiorentina steak, Lampredotto.

Which wines to taste in Tuscany?

The Tuscan hilly territory and mild climate are particularly suitable for cultivating vines. While in Tuscany, your wine tastings will surely include many of the native vine varieties that can be found in this territory. Looking at black grape varieties, Sangiovese remains the most characteristics and widespread. Another important local variety is Canaiolo, while Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines are also cultivated. The main white grape varieties of Tuscany instead are: Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia, Vermentino and Vernaccia di San Gimignano. From the latter the homonymous DOC wine is obtained, which was even cited by Dante in his Divine Comedy. Other native vines of considerable interest are Foglia Tonda, Pollera, Durella Gentile, Vermentino Nero, Pugnitello, Colorino and Malvasia Nera.

Which is the best season to visit Tuscany?

The best moments for you to enjoy a wine tasting or winery tour in Tuscany are late spring and early autumn. Visiting during this period will allow you to enjoy particularly pleasant weather and temperatures both in the countryside and in the larger cities, as summers tend to be rather hot, making sightseeing less pleasant. During September and October, the grapes are harvested and the landscape is tinged with autumn colors.

What things to do in Tuscany?

Its wavy and sunny hills dotted with cypresses and vineyards are only one of the reasons why Tuscany is so popular. This area was also the cradle of the Renaissance, and still safeguards many treasures of this age nowadays. Some of the sites that are worth visiting between a winery tour and a wine tasting are the city of Florence and its Uffizi Gallery, Pisa and its Leaning Tower, Siena, Lucca, Volterra, Montepulciano and Elba's island.
