A land of abbeys and priories in the province of Brescia, Franciacorta boasts winemaking traditions that trace back to ancient Roman times. Lying to the south of the Lago d’Iseo and bounded on the west by the Oglio river, Franciacorta is a visual feast of undulating morainic hills that gently slope towards the plain to the south; thanks to its unique position, it enjoys a particularly mild, beneficent climate. With its ancient villages and splendid scenery, Franciacorta is a treasure-trove of magnificent mansions, centuries-old villas, castles, churches, and monasteries. And it is precisely one of these venerable rural residences, in the area of Monticelli Brusati, that is home to Azienda Lo Sparviere, the wine estate owned by the Gussalli Beretta family. The property covers 60 hectares, of which 25 are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot noir. The cellar building itself dates back to the16th century, and owes its name to the hawk that appears on the coat-of-arms gracing the fireplace in the main hall, which was recently restored to its pristine beauty in the estate villa. The wines are made and matured in the old cellar; beneath its centuries-old vaulted ceiling, lie the various styles of Franciacorta DOCG--Brut, Extra Brut, Dosaggio Zero, Satèn, and Rosé, their bouquet and mousse becoming ever richer, over a minimum of 24 months. The meticulous quality-selection of the grapes, sourced exclusively from the estate vineyards, as well as a crop-per-vine purposely kept at very low levels are the key to the sensory qualities and the fine-tuned balance that are the hallmarks of Lo Sparviere wines. Centuries of talent and experience, of cutting-edge viticultural and winemaking practices: these are the authentic, deep-rooted origins of the wines produced by Lo Sparviere.

The Panizzari agricultural firm starts at the end of the 19th century, from the love that grandfather Angelo had for the wine that the old farmer tradition has been able to pass on from generation to generation. As years passed my father Giovanni Battista and later I, have reinforced our production with a qualified survey and development of our vineyards following strict methods of production that determine the high quality of our product. Since then and even now our relationship with clients has always been direct. This has permitted us to satisfy their needs and better our wine.

The Picchioni Andrea Winery is a small plot of land, approximately seven hectares, located in the Solinga valley. The vineyards grow on a south-exposed steep sloping hillside, on sandy and pebbled soil. The endless summer days bless the grapes with all the energy they need for a full ripening: the vine struggles in the light and the heat for every single drop of water. Oltrepò Pavese is a triangle of land located in Lombardy and wedged between the Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont regions, which forms the northern end of the Appennini mountains. Due to the region’s strategic location, in the past centuries it was crossed by people moving throughout the Padana plains and by pilgrims travelling to Rome. The ancient ‘Salt Roads’ also run through it. Canneto Pavese is a small town, traditionally renowned for wine production, which until recently could boast the highest ratio of vineyards per total land area in Italy. During the XIX century, its full-bodied wines quickly gained a national reputation for their excellence and were also successfully exported worldwide, their preservation being ensured by their high alcoholic content. In the second half of the XX century, the increasing demand for low-cost wines led winemakers to abandon many of the best vineyards, whose care was difficult and expensive because of their position. So, great vineyards such as Monte Bruciato, Montuè and Solinga remained sadly ignored for years. Only recently, a host of young wine-growers, inspired by a true love for their land, brought them to life again.

We are a family of winegrowers and, for over 150 years, we have been passionately devoted to the cultivation of Nebbiolo. This is a rare grape variety that, over the centuries, has adapted to the Valtellina, a land like no other, where everything is still done by hand. For 5 generations we have always waited for “the time it takes” “the right waiting time” and it is this that sets the pace of our work. Time and humility are what make our wine the purest, sincerest expression of this land and of the people who cultivate it with such dedication. This was the lesson we were taught by our father Arturo, without letting ourselves be influenced by passing fashions and conventional tastes. We are convinced that the outstanding qualities of Nebbiolo from the Alps means it is more than worthy of its place of honour on the international market of fine wines. Without this worldwide acknowledgement, this age-old activity would simply not be economically sustainable for it rejects any idea of modern mass-production.

Valtellina lies north of Lake Como in the province of Sondrio. It is sheltered from the cold northern winds by the magnificent mountain chain of the Rhaetian Alps. The Valley, which runs 40 kms from east to west, is exposed to the sun all day. It is divided into four sub-zones that give their names to the different types of wine produced here: Grumello, Sassella, Inferno and Valgella. The territory has two DOCGs, the more widespread Valtellina Superiore and the Sforzato di Valtellina.

It was the dawn of a day in late winter. We were watching the light entering the valley, invading it slowly, moving the darkness and the muffled clouds. All the vineyards around us seemed to listen to our thoughts. Maybe they are the ones they have asked us to join this adventure.Or maybe our souls were just thirsty for this new adventure. That morning our flight has begun. The snow that begins melting and with the first sun of spring the crying of the vines begins. Everything spring up again and from that moment everything will be transformed by the accurate hands of the vine-dressers. Until the fruit and its harvest. Hands that pick up the grape full of colors and perfumes. The hands of the cellarmen that transform the fruit into wine. Earth and sky have become Wine. The Nebbiolo of the mountains. The magnificent land of Valtellina runs between the Alps from east to west and lets the rhaetian side exposed to sun and cool winds. A land borrowed from the mountains by the secular work of man, transformed to give us marvellous vineyards. A valley run by the Adda river from the peaks to the Lake of Como, which give a unique climate with an unceasing flow.
