About Winery and Wines

The Coppola family, of Sicilian origins, arrived in Gallipoli in the 15th century. In 1489, in the Bella Città, Orsino Coppola married Laura Cuti, descendant of a noble family of the place, who brought as a dowry an estate of 8 hectares in the countryside of Sannicola, handed down from father to son for 15 generations, still owned by Coppola and cultivated as a vineyard. In 1715, Carlo Antonio Coppola built Palazzo Coppola in Alezio, in whose cellars were located a millstone for the pressing of grapes and a barrel room capable of holding 20 large chestnut wood casks. In the next generation, the founder of the family, Giuseppe Francesco, had three sons: Giovanni, a journalist, founded the newspaper "Lo Spartaco" (1887-1914); Carlo graduated in medicine and Niccolò became a lawyer. The passion of the whole family for viticulture was such that all of them, during harvest time, took a break from their profession to dedicate themselves to the harvesting and vinification of grapes. In the following period the Coppola's farm began to consolidate its entrepreneurial character thanks to the innovations introduced by Niccolò, Giovanni's son, who graduated in engineering in 1921, during the period of grape harvesting he totally devoted himself to the winery and decided to build a winery equipped with modern winemaking techniques.

Immersed in a green lung, among vineyards, olive trees and a botanical garden with more than one hundred species of trees, the winery is located in Gallipoli, very close to the sea, inside the "Tenuta Patitari Torre Sabea" in the place where once there were stables with barn and a farmhouse, covering a total area of 1000 square meters. A large show room with a sales and tasting room, the production and storage area, an art room with a permanent museum, the terraces, the barrel room crossed by a glass walkway on the second floor from where it is possible to see the barrels. The guided tour winds its way through the entire structure: a place of production which is also a place of hospitality. The disposition of the rooms guarantees an adequate independence of the various functions while a harmonic game of lights and solids crossed by glass walls allows the immediate perception of the whole oenological complex. Cantina Coppola is a space open to art in its many facets, to culture, conviviality and education. Adjacent to the winery, was also inaugurated the new restaurant of the property: Vigneto del Gusto. This project was born with the intent to combine different skills in a unique offer in the area: accommodation, wine and food together.
