I've been visiting Hahndorf Hill for many years now and it is my all time favourite winery. I have NEVER had a bad glass of wine there. Every one of their wines is an absolute classic interpretation of its style. I've been to other wineries and tried the pinot gris, or the sav blanc, or the riesling and been hard pressed to pick the intended style between the samples, as too often they were too much alike. Not so at Hahndorf Hill Wines where the wines are exquisitely crafted and true to type. The Gruner Veltliner is exceptional in that it is classified as the most food friendly wine in the world and HH does a cracking job of presenting their Gruner Veltliner. Their Shiraz Vault is a stunning gift for the wine connoisseur who has everything. I especially like their approach to the growing of their vines, with biodynamic practices. Larry is an outstanding host and if he is not there, you will still receive an outstanding experience in wine tasting from Dee or the other highly knowledgeable staff of HH wines. A jewel in the crown of the Adelaide Hills Wine Region and thoroughly recommended.

My friends & I have a lovely visit to the Hahndorf Hill Winery. The view are gorgeous; the staff were knowledgeable and attentive, but did not hover. Between us, we enjoyed the Chocovino experience with both red & white wines, and a cheese platter. Would highly recommend a visit to HHW.

Fantastic wines, friendly staff and lovely surroundings. The winemakers too are lovely people. Have no issue with being charged $5 for a tasting either these days, the winemakers put so much of effort into making the wines and then to take the time out to discuss them with you and explain the differences between them. Why not.
Highly recommended!

About Winery and Wines

Handorf Hill Winery (HHW) is owned by Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson, who operate the boutique business together with a dedicated team. Larry was once an intensive-care doctor who gave up medicine to become the founder of Mulderbosch Vineyards in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Marc is a former journalist and advertising copywriter from Cape Town. Having built Mulderbosch into an international brand, Larry sold the winery and immigrated with Marc to Australia in 1997. After falling in love with the cool-climate Adelaide Hills, they bought and further developed Hahndorf Hill Winery. Today Larry oversees all vineyard and winery operations at Hahndorf Hill, while Marc is responsible for marketing and the cellar door. Other team members at HHW include our cellar door manager Dee Wright, brand ambassador and sales representative Jack Simmonds, ChocoVino co-ordinator Christine Worsfield and cellar door sales assistant Sloan Bendikas.

Hahndorf Hill's six-hectare vineyard is located at the edge of historic Hahndorf village and on the slopes of a gentle hill which, over a century ago, contained a slate quarry. It is very apparent, when walking along the slopes of the vineyard blocks at Hahndorf Hill, that slate forms a significant part of the mineral component of the soils. Our vineyard topsoils consist of a sandy-loam and red-clay blend, richly embellished with blue-red slate, quartz and ironstone intrusions. The subsoils comprise deep red clay. Austrian varieties This abundance of diverse mineral components in the soil translates into a distinct mineral element in all our wines, which is especially beneficial for our Austrian varieties - Gruner Veltliner, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt (with St. Laurent waiting in the wings). In addition, the Adelaide Hills enjoys the unique combination of a low mean January temperature coupled with a significantly high diurnal variation. This diurnal variation is a significant quality defining factor according to producers of these varieties in their native Austria. The Adelaide Hills' slow ripening, cool-climate environment allows for all our grapes to benefit from an extended ripening season with beautifully warm days and cold nights.
