About Winery and Wines

We (Rod and Suzanne Windrim) planted our first vines on our first Hunter Valley property in 1981. In 1997 we moved to a picturesque property in Broke Fordwich and planted a much larger 48 acre vineyard. We completed courses in wine processing and viticulture at Kurri Kurri Tafe and later attended a Rudolph Steiner Agriculture course. This course was hugely influential and impacted immediately on our overall approach to viticulture and farming. By early 2002, we were fully committed to Biodynamics and commenced to manage our farm organically and biodynamically. Krinklewood Vineyard became fully certified biodynamic by 2007. Krinklewood is a family owned boutique Hunter Valley winery and vineyard in which every member of the family contributes significantly. We, together with our great team of vineyard and cellar door staff, are all committed and ‘hands on’ in the daily biodynamic operations of the vineyard and farm and delight in the fact that ‘what you put in is what you get back’. Our unique logo is somewhat a tribute to our beloved Limousin cattle. Prior to the vineyard being planted, Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard was home to more than 60 Limousin cattle. Gradually the herd has been reduced to make room for the vines, but the remaining herd still roam freely and contribute significantly to our biodynamic farming practices. This striking breed of cattle originate from the Limoge province in France where an ancient cave painting depicting the bulls gave inspiration for the Krinklewood logo.

The vineyard is located in the southern end of the Broke Fordwich valley and has a slightly cooler climate than most of the Hunter Valley wineries. Every aspect of our vineyard is managed in a wholistic and sustainable way, without the use of any chemicals. For more information on how we manage our farm biodynamically, go to our Biodynamics page. The white vines were planted in 1998 are located on a flat bed of free-draining loam organic soil which is ideal for producing classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay. In more recent years we have added to the whites with small plantings of Gerwurztraminer and Viognier. The red vines where planted in 1998 and are situated on a gentle slope of clay-loam organic soil which is well suited to classic Hunter Shiraz. Later, we planted Mourvedre to make our Francesca Rosé and a small planting of the Spanish variety Tempranillo. At Krinklewood, we are continually striving to produce the best organic wines by having the healthiest soil and vines. Healthy vines produce well ripened fruit with wonderful flavour, good pH, natural acidity and characteristics the reflect the unique Krinklewood terroir.
