About Winery and Wines

The stunning Peregrine Winery building has won international awards and accolades for its design and construction, which evokes the wingspan of a Peregrine falcon as it glides on thermal air rising from the heated land. The complex was commissioned for business in December 2003 and has enchanted people from around the world ever since. Winning awards from London-based Architecture Review magazine and the NZ Institute of Architects, the changing roof gradient, which appears to rise from the valley floor, was inspired by the kinetic rotation of a bird in flight. Even within the context of its rugged and dramatic natural landscape, the building soars above its surrounds like an elegant blade of light. Its simple industrial character is overlaid by a translucent rising roof canopy unifying ‘front’ and ‘back’ of house. It retains its sense of place by using materials similar to those seen in neighbouring rural buildings, and is designed to make best use of space and light. As ‘home’ to Peregrine Wines – Wines with Altitude – the building reinforces the winery's dedication to producing world-class wines and the company's ongoing commitment to the work of the Wingspan Trust in preserving endangered species of native birds.
