The older the vine, the deeper its roots reach and the better its ability to absorb sufficient water from the soil even during dry and hot periods. The same is true for family roots that encourage the winemaker day after day – also in the Wetli family of winemakers: With Kaspar jun., Matthias, Florian and Adrian, the roots of Kaspar sen. and his wife Susanne go very deep. By the way: As it gets older, a vine produces less fruit. However, as far as the concentration of the ingredients is concerned, old vines are often superior to the young fruits. With the experience of the senior, the innovative ideas of the junior and the instinct of a winemaker both share, they endeavour to continue traditions and add to the excellent reputation of the winemaking district of Berneck. The life of a winemaker is a joyful life, indeed. Grapes need time to ripen and unfold their individual typical fruit note and characteristic colour. Only when the instinct of a winemaker tells him so will he harvest and press them and then fill them in casks made from local wood to mature to superior wines.
