About Winery and Wines
Vintner Barry Waitte founded Tamber Bey Vineyards in 1999, when he purchased a 60-acre vineyard in the Yountville Appellation and an 11-acre property in the renowned Oakville Appellation. This marked Waitte’s entry into the wine business as a grower. He immediately hired vineyard manager Josh Clark to plant and farm the properties with the goal of growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Dijon Chardonnay.
The 3-acre Tamber Bey Estate Vineyard is located in the southeast corner of Napa Valley's famous Oakville Appellation. The vineyard is comprised of gravel/loam soils that are relatively shallow and well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The site enjoys early morning fog and late afternoon breezes that are influenced by San Francisco Bay to the south. The Estate Vineyard was planted in 2000 to Cabernet Sauvignon clones 337 and 4. The 9,800 vines are planted in a tight formation to encourage competition for nutrients. This “stressing of the vines” results in small clusters of intense fruit that is used to make the Tamber Bey Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.
