A great short intimate introduction to the wines of St Emillion
We took the afternoon tour of St Emillion which included two winery stops and a visit around the village. Our driver/guide Margot was very engaging and knowledgeable of the area.
The first stop was at Château Cadet Bon. A beautiful setting with extensive views across the vines. We had a tour or the wine production facility and were told about the basic processes. Our guide at the winery, Ambre, gave us a brief rundown on the basics of wine tasting and then introduced us to 4 of the key products of the Château. Most enjoyable!
Next stop was the ancient and beautiful village of village of St Emillion. I was quite surprised that at the age of some of the buildings, especially the churches.. Some of us stopped for a glass of wine at Margot’s recommended wine bar . I had a glass of the 2011 Alter Ego from Margaux. It was expensive but in great shape, being poured using the Coravin system, and was absolutely magnificent..
The final stop was at Clos Systey where Fannie the proprietere introduce us to the winery facility and gave us a lovely tasting under the shady tree in front of the winery. It was a much more intimate affair than the earlier tasting with Fannie’s mother ( the winemaker) and her husband and young son arriving during the session. It really is a family affair. Fannie’s approach is quite innovative for Bordeaux and includes a lighter style of red suitable for serving chilled in summer. We had a lovely time there.
I would thoroughly recommend this tour, to people starting their journey of experiencing the Bordeaux Wine scene, and St Emillion in particular.
Thank you, Margot Ambre and Fannie!

The volume of the commentary at the rear of the vehicle was too loud and in the front too soft. The balance was not right
