About Winery and Wines
Cantina del Colonna embodies a legacy shaped by the lessons of hard work and daily dedication. Spanning over six generations, this journey began with producing wines for family sustenance and reached a pivotal moment in 2018, when the focus shifted to showcasing the region’s treasures globally and launching the business.
Today, tradition and innovation are seamlessly intertwined in every aspect of the cellar's operations. Embracing both modern technology and a deep-rooted passion for the land, Cantina del Colonna continues to honor its heritage. The core philosophy centers on the belief that wine originates in the vineyard. Therefore, meticulous care is taken with every vine to produce the finest grapes, ensuring that all wine lines meet the highest quality standards.
Cantina del Colonna’s wines are a testament to the deep connection with their territory, crafted from old vineyards and following traditional vinification methods. All wines are low in sulfites and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with grapes carefully hand-harvested to ensure the highest quality.
L'Balordo Umbria Bianco I.G.T.
Produced from Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes grown in the hills of the Upper Tiber Valley in Umbria, this wine is bottled and aged in glass after a lengthy maturation in steel barrels. With a straw-yellow color and flavors reminiscent of yellow berries, it pairs beautifully with cured meats, cheeses, first courses, and lighter meats, including fish. Serve at around 7°C.
L'Balordo Umbria Rosso I.G.T.
Made from Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero grapes from the Upper Tiber Valley, this ruby-red wine undergoes maceration with the skins, followed by fermentation in steel barrels for approximately 7 months and further aging in glass bottles for 3 months. It features flavors of red fruits and blueberries, making it an excellent match for cold cuts, mature cheeses, first courses, white and red meats, and roasts. Serve at around 17°C.
L'Tribunale Umbria Rosso I.G.T.
Crafted from specially selected Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero grapes, this wine begins its fermentation process in steel barrels and develops character through 12 months of aging in oak barrels, followed by an additional 6 months in the bottle. It pairs well with cold cuts, well-matured cheeses, first courses with game sauces, red meats, and stews. Serve at around 17°C.
L'Colonna Passito Umbria I.G.T.
The flagship of Cantina del Colonna’s production, this Passito, also known as "Vino Santo da Uve Affumicate dell'Alta Valle del Tevere" (Slow Food Presidium), is made from hand-selected white grapes. The drying process, lasting about 5 months, occurs in ancient rooms where bunches are hung on strings in wooden "moraletti." After drying, the grapes are reselected by hand before pressing. The resulting must is aged in oak barrels for at least 5 years with a "Madre" of yeasts and enzymes collected over generations. This rich, complex wine pairs excellently with cheeses, dry desserts, and spoon desserts. Serve at room temperature.
