En remontant de Matala (sud) vers Heraclion, nous sommes tombés sur cette cave qui faisait déguster son vin au verre. Plusieurs formules sont proposées de la dégustation de 4 verres, jusqu'à 10 et plus. Les prix sont corrects et la dégustation, accompagnée de fromage, de gressins, des olives, des croûtons... Nous avons visité la cave pour la fabrication et le stockage. Superbe accueil en anglais avec quelques mots de français. Les vins sont parfaits et nous en avons ramené quelques bouteilles pour déguster en France. Nous y reviendrons.

About Winery and Wines

Idaia Winery was founded by oenologists Vassilis Laderos and Kalliopi Volitaki, who are committed to showcasing Crete’s native grape varieties and diverse vineyards. Located in the heart of the Cretan vineyard region, within the PDO Dafnes zone, the winery started humbly in 2000 with just a few stainless tanks and barrels. Over time, thanks to strong relationships with local vine growers, Idaia Winery has expanded its operations. Today, the winery produces approximately 130,000 bottles annually, 35% of which are exported to more than 10 countries. The next generation, now involved, promises to carry on the legacy.

The winery's journey began with a passion for wine and a love for Crete, which helped overcome initial challenges. Through careful investment and dedication, the winery’s infrastructure grew, ensuring a balance between tradition and innovation. With a firm focus on local viticulture, Idaia Winery remains committed to excellence, producing wines that represent the rich culture and history of the region.

Idaia Winery focuses on producing wines from Cretan indigenous grape varieties, offering 12 distinct wine labels. The wines are grouped into 4 categories:

Idaia Classics: Signature wines made since 2004, offering exceptional value and consistency.
Single Varietals: Wines from indigenous grapes, reflecting the Cretan terroir.
The Extroverted: Fresh, fruity, and approachable wines for everyday enjoyment.
Late Released: Complex wines, matured in the cellar before release.

Key grape varieties include Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Vilana (whites), and Liatiko, Kotsifali, Mandilari (reds).
