About Winery and Wines

The first records of activity and wine production on the property date back to around 1270, based on letters from the Prince of Piedmont found in the castle archives. A document from 1362, also found at the castle, attests to the family's purchase of the first piece of land suitable for becoming a vineyard, the Castelletto. The construction of the building dates back to 1270 and began as a fortress, commissioned by Antonio and Domenico Roero. In 1512, the Malabaila family took over. One of the most influential members of the family was Luigi Gerolamo Malabaila, Italian ambassador to the Austrian court, where he met and married Maria Anna Palffy-Ordöd degli Esteràzy, a well-known Austrian family. Our wine production, on about 22 hectares of vineyards, is around 100 thousand bottles a year. The difference between the Roero and the Barolo of the Langhe lies precisely in these characteristics of the soil. Both wines are Barolos but, being Docg, the wine takes its name from the territory where it is made: Roero is therefore the Barolo that is born here, in this area. The wine remains in barrique for two years and at least four in the bottle, because they want an important and structured product. Today the production has been moved to the Pradvaj farmhouse. It is here that, in 1985, starting from a very old vine, they began to produce Roero Arneis Docg.
