About Winery and Wines

Mas Alart has been a family winery since 1897. When François Alart bought it at the end of the 19th century, he created a bond between the Alart family and this place, and this will continue for decades to come. Today, more than 100 years later, we strive to preserve the artisan spirit of our ancestors. Bernard Alart, my grandfather, had two daughters. So, although we no longer bear the name of our great-great-grandfather, the lineage continues. I have been taking care of the estate since 1997. I hope to do my best to continue the work already accomplished. Because techniques and knowledge are changing ever more rapidly. New skills must be mastered every day. Today, the independent winemaker has at least four professions: winegrower, winemaker, merchant, and manager! To which must now be added webmaster and community manager! Being good at everything is a challenge I modestly try to meet every day.

Mas Alart consists of a 20-hectare vineyard and a group of buildings located in the heart of the vineyard. This was the intention of the men who built this estate, with the aim of streamlining their work. Over the past thirty years, the grape varieties have changed significantly. In fact, we have gone from 4 grape varieties in 1990 to 13 today. We have 7 whites (Muscat à Petits Grains, Muscat d'Alexandrie, Maccabeu, Grenache Blanc, Roussane, Malvoisie, and Viognier) and 6 reds (Syrah, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Merlot, Marselan, Cabernet Sauvignon). The terroir is mainly composed of Pliocene terraces. The clay-sandy soils contain numerous quartz pebbles. The clay helps maintain freshness despite the very dry Roussillon climate. The sand promotes drainage and prevents water accumulation that clay could cause. The pebbles, by accumulating heat, promote the ripening of the grapes.
