About Winery and Wines

Tyrrell’s has been a cornerstone of the Hunter Valley wine industry for over 160 years since Edward Tyrrell first planted Semillon and Shiraz vines in the mid-19th century. Over the years, the estate has gained extensive knowledge of the region, helping to elevate it as one of Australia’s top winegrowing areas. Tyrrell pioneered the cultivation of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the country and has been instrumental in establishing Hunter Valley Semillon’s international fame. Its Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, has earned nearly 5,500 medals and over 330 trophies.

The Tyrrell’s estate, located in the foothills of the Brokenback Range in the Hunter Valley, is home to a diverse array of vineyards with unique soil compositions, ranging from sandy loams to red clays over limestone. These soils contribute to the distinctive character of Tyrrell’s wines. The estate features many parcels with vines over 100 years old, still producing wines that capture the essence of both Tyrrell’s style and the Hunter Valley. These old vines reflect the history and tradition embedded in the estate's winemaking.
