Wow, where do I begin? After driving for an 1 hour and 30 minute from D.C., I expected to have the experience of a lifetime. To my surprise, my 1 hour tour would be dwindled into an 35-45 minute excursion. The tour was short lived when the tour guide took my party from the front door to the side of building where the tour ended. In his presentation he repeatedly said

We had a lovely time at Philip Carter! The winery is tucked away in the middle of beautiful Virginia countryside. Dan was our pourer and he was so fun! I highly recommend chatting with him. He's knowledgable and very honest, which is refreshing to find in a wine pourer. The wine itself is some of the better wine we've found in Virginia. The whites are definitely on the sweeter side, but definitely would pair well with a cheese plate. Their reds are very Cab Franc heavy as that grows well in VA, and so that's an interesting change compared to the Cab Sauv heavy reds from California. Looked like they did tours and had live music, but we were there too early for any of that. Nice place that'd I'd definitely go back to.

Bypass this winery. Go around the corner to Winding Road cellars. Eric was friendly and knowledgeable at the tasting, but that was the only enjoyable part of the visit. Unless you intend to join their wine club you will not be treated well. I visit at least 15 wineries a year and have not had a bad experience until now. My 110 bottle wine cooler will not be housing any wines from here. Of the 9 wines I tasted only 1 scored above a 6. But even at that the treatment at the

We spent our honeymoon here in the cottage and loved it. Jimm is very welcoming and makes you feel at home. Breakfast was delicious and we loved all of the wines. Will definitely be coming back several times a year.

We have been coming here consistently for 8 years now from arlington va. The wines are fantastic and Jimm is a very gracious hosts. Great location and perfect place to enjoy a bottle or two.

This was an amazing weekend with excellent accommodations and proximity to a couple of the best restaurants we've ever eaten at. Jim and Kathy (and their 2 beautiful dogs and cat) are simply wonderful. We loved the wine as well. We have already been recommending this place to our friends. We got so lucky getting the Carriage House at the last minute because of a cancelation. Book early, because they go fast. We had a perfect time away from cell phones and television, and it was quality time together. There are many other wineries to explore nearby and places to hike and fish as well. Lastly, the fruit and muffins (baked by Jim) are out of this world. We ended our trip with a relaxing drive on Skyline Drive and made it back to civilization just in time to watch Steeler football.
