Silver Moon Winery was founded in 2004, in a stroke of luck. Owner Ken Eschbacher was inspired to open his own winery when, after receiving a bottle of custom-labeled wine, he became fascinated by the process. Ken did extensive research, learning about wine-making and the ins and outs of a winery, including all steps to make the wine itself, as well as bottling, and labeling. After a year learning all he could about the business, Ken made the leap and opened Silver Moon Winery. When the business began, Silver Moon Winery was focused on education, teaching people how to make their own wine. In 2007, the winery moved to its current location in Dover, Ohio and changed focus. Since then, Silver Moon Winery has been all about making wine! All of our wines are made with juice imported from major grape and wine regions around the world. Today, we make and sell over 40 styles of wines. Our repertoire includes sweet wines, a local favorite, crisp whites, and bold reds. We also produce a number of delicious dessert wines. In 2010, we began distributing our wines in shops around the area. In addition to our wine tastings and sales at the winery, Silver Moon Winery bottles can now be found in over 350 stores throughout Ohio!

That's the way we like to think of our place. Where else can you go that is 45 minutes from much of Columbus and enjoy rolling vineyards, great wine, fun events, and a relaxing wine experience? Ron and Lynn Rutter started RockSide Winery in 2007. They found a beautiful 17 acre spot among the rolling hills of Fairfield County near Lancaster and planted the first vines. Four years later in 2011 the winery and tasting room were built and the new winery was on its way! In October of 2014 Robin and Valerie Coolidge purchased the winery and vineyards. Along with their son Ryan, the couple had owned Wyandotte Winery in Columbus for several years. Wyandotte, an urban winery located in a neighborhood setting, is land locked, and has no space for vineyards, just a few vines planted on the property. RockSide was the perfect way for the family to branch out and expand their winery business. Ohio can be a challenging place to have a vineyard. Our winters are cold, our summers are relatively short and are humid enough to cause grape vines diseases to take hold easier here than in other grape growing regions. There are four and a half acres of Vinifera, French-American Hybrids, and Native American vines surrounding the RockSide Winery and tasting room.

Madison Wine Cellars, Inc. is comprised of some well known faces and names in the Ohio wine industry. The group is comprised of two families that have worked closely together for years. Tony Debevc, owner of Debonne Vineyards-Ohio’s largest estate winery, will be in charge of wine production. Cindy Lindberg, event coordinator at Debonne and former school psychologist with the Mayfield City School District, will be in charge of the day to day operations of the winery. Grand River Cellars was first established in 1976 known at that time as the Grand River Wine Company. During its first few years the focus was on wine production and the growing of quality vinifera grapes. The initial winery opened to the public in 1978 and grew in popularity over the next 20 years. The owners, Bill & Carol Worthy, decided to sell the winery in 1998. In August of 2005, Madison Wine Cellars, Inc. purchased the winery from the former owners and began to develop what is now called Grand River Cellars. Inside the new Grand River Cellars you will be welcomed by a warm and inviting atmosphere that includes a beautiful fireplace, many hand painted murals, and a large bar area for friends to gather. Winemaking has been a part of the Mastropiétro family tradition for half a century. During those years, grandfather Joseph, father Daniel and his brothers crushed grapes and made wine annually for family consumption in the “cellar." Tales of the process and special occasion tasting left a deeply embedded impression particularly with two young family members. This firmly implanted impression led to the vision you are now embarking on, the winery.

The Winery at Wolf Creek was founded in 1980 by Andrew Wineberg on the property of his parents Melvin and Harriet Wineberg. The initial 10 acres of vineyard were planted at the base of the hill below the winery and another two acres were planted on top of the hill south of the winery. The first vineyard was planted with Cayuga White, Seyval, Vignoles, Dechaunac, Chancellor, Leon Millot, and Vidal. In 1984 the winery’s original cellar was blasted into the rocky hillside where the winery is currently located. The original tasting room was located at the back of the cellar (now an office). The bar was made of two barrels, and a single picnic table provided the only seating. The first bottle of wine was sold in June of 1985. The first three wines released were Seyval, Vignoles, and Sweet Revenge. The winery continued to grow and add to its selection of estate grown wines until Andrew Wineberg’s untimely death in June of 2000. The winery operation was then purchased by long-time vineyard manager Andy Troutman and his family in June of 2002. Since then the winery has expanded production and vineyard acreage, and continues to offer a selection of mostly Ohio-grown wines. Much of the original hillside vineyards have been replanted with European grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Pinot Noir. Andy and Deanna also own the Troutman Vineyards winery in Wooster that specializes solely in estate and locally-grown wines.

When the Tebeau’s purchased their 36-acre farm in 1996, they had no idea at the time what fate had in store for this limestone soil. They realized that this was not prime farmland, but that was not why they bought it. It was a love of nature and the rural lifestyle that made this property a great match. Knowing that grapes love limestone laced soil, it didn’t take long for Bob & Mary to start the research to turn this barren land into a productive vineyard and winery.

The Heineman Winery was founded in 1888 by Gustav Heineman, an immigrant from Baden, Germany, the grape growing region of that country. The Lake Erie Islands were already noted for quality grapes as a result of ideal soil conditions and the long growing season because of the tempering effect of Lake Erie. By 1900, Heineman's was one of 17 wineries on Put-in-Bay. The passage of the Volstead Act creating the Prohibition of Alcohol in 1919 was catastrophic to the Island's grape and wine industry. Most of the wineries failed and the vineyards fell into disrepair. Heineman's survived under Gustav's son, Norman, by selling unfermented grape juice and providing taxi cab service to and tours of the Winery's caves. Today the third, fourth and fifth generations of Heinemans, Louis, Edward and Dustin share the family wine making tradition. The Heinemans and other local growers cultivate 50 acres of grapes on the island. This gives the winery "vine to wine" quality control year after year. The Lubrusca or native grapes are grown on South Bass. The two major varieties are Concord and Catawba. These are used to produce two grape juices and many of the wines including the most popular, Pink Catawba. Ives, Delaware, and Niagara are other examples of Labrusca grapes grown on the Island. Wines produced from a single grape and that carry the name of the grape are called Varietal, that is, made from a single grape variety. Other wines are created when two or more varietals are blended and given names like Sauterne or Burgundy to denote their classical heritage.

Built in 1991 as an enclosure for our mowers and assorted farm equipment, it was converted into a horse barn in 1994, after our neighbors gave us two "free" horses..... Six acres of fenced pasture, four Morton BarM Stalls, saddles, tack, arena and literally tens of thousands of dollars later, I still question the "look a gift horse in the mouth" concept, but we loved those two Quarters and they lived long and happy lives, both passing within a year of each other at age 29. Recognize the field behind them? The current vineyard was Pistol and HB's grazing pastures.
