Cellers Scala Dei S.A.
Über das Weingut
Cellers de Scala Dei is the historical heart of winemaking in the Priorat, with origins dating back to 1194, when Carthusian monks founded the Scala Dei monastery at the foot of the Montsant mountain range. It was these monks who first introduced viticulture to the area, producing the earliest wines of Priorat as early as 1263.
After the monastery was abandoned in the 19th century, the estate’s legacy continued through local families, eventually leading to the creation of the winery. In 1878, Scala Dei produced the first bottled wines of Priorat, earning international recognition with a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition.
Refounded in 1974, the winery played a key role in preserving the identity of Priorat wines during a period when few producers were active in the region. Today, Cellers de Scala Dei blends centuries of history with a modern vision, crafting wines that still age in the original 17th-century cellars.
Über die Weine
Scala Dei wines are a true expression of the Priorat terroir, shaped by high-altitude vineyards and a privileged natural environment at the foot of the Montsant Natural Park.
The estate cultivates around 70 hectares of vineyards across 41 plots, with Garnacha (Grenache) representing about 70% of the production. The vineyards benefit from altitude, Mediterranean climate, and the characteristic soils of the region, producing wines with depth, freshness, and strong personality.
Winemaking follows a sustainable and respectful approach:
Organic viticulture without herbicides, pesticides, or insecticides
Use of natural fertilizers such as sheep manure
Manual harvesting with strict grape selection
Individual vinification of each vineyard parcel
No animal-based fining agents (vegan wines)
Minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the grapes
The result is a range of wines that are authentic, elegant, and terroir-driven, combining tradition with precision and environmental responsibility.
