Cantina e Vini

Poggio ai Laghi Winery is situated right inside the Chianti Valley, a territory known worldwide for its historical production of quality wine, the beauty of its hills that dominate the landscape, and symbol of the excellence of the “made in Italy”.

The cellar was born on a plateau, also known as “poggio”, between two medieval lakes at the border of the property: the Lake Oscuro and the Lake of Sant’Antonio. The poggio and the two lakes create a perfect microclimate for the vines cultivation: the termal excursion gives us the chance to make wines particularly fragrant and the constant ventilation allows us to cultivate the grapes biologically.

Around 10 hectars of vineyards in which the king grape is the Sangiovese, together with other vines well loved by winelovers, like the Merlot and Vermentino. From here great wines are brought to life, either ready to be drinken or with a potential lifespan that goes up to 30 years.

Toghether with an accurate oenological research and work on the fields, all the Poggio ai Laghi’s wines carry good wishes, thanks to the strict tie with the Protectors of Monteriggioni to which they are dedicated: Donna Ava and her seven handmaids (Oletta, Nina, Lucilla, Firmina, Arania, Arella and Aranda).

“In every sip of our wines you find the good luck we have grown in these vineyards”

Eight women that lived around the year 1000 A.D. in Montemaggio, the hill that stands in front of Monteriggioni. There are numerous legends that local people still pass through generations, remembering the generous protection that the Countess and her handmaids offered to citizen and foreigners.

Poggio ai Laghi was born from the inevitable love for our land: Italy, Tuscany, the Chianti valley. DOC is the agricultural soul of “Agricola Poggio ai Laghi, Francesco Sguazzi, entrepreneur with numerous activities (from catering to real estate) where people are always at the center. One day Sguazzi found the cellar in Monteriggioni and decided to add “wine” to his projects. He then selected a team of professionals with the same passion about wine, Chianti and Tuscany.

To enhance the wines of Poggio ai Laghi, Francesco Sguazzi selected an oenologist who knows profundly Tuscany, its vines and the production area of the wines of its cellar. Filippo Mazzorana, Tuscan DOC like Sguazzi, embodies these characteristics, being a long-time professional, competent both in terms of agronomy and oenology, and above all linked to his territory of origin and to its main grape variety: Sangiovese.

It is infact called Generation Sangiovese the project launched in 2021 by the Tuscan winemaker, aimed at enhancing the grapes at the base of the most prestigious regional wines (Chianti, Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and multiple Supertuscans) developing their expressiveness declined in different terroirs, still led by local vigneron families.

In addition to the Sangiovese enhancement project, Mazzorana directly takes care of the company’s production process thanks to the laboratory led by him, Enocofi. The project Poggio ai Laghi comes after heterogeneous experiences in which he worked wines from Italy, France and Spain.

Since November 2012 he has been the winemaker of the Cantine Borghi di San Vincenzo a Torri where he selects Tuscan and non-Tuscan DOC and DOCG wines appreciated by wine lovers from all over the world who visit our cellar in Monteriggioni to encounter quality and the tradition of the renowned made in Italy, of the famous Tuscany and of the even more famous Chianti wine.
