More information on Navarre

The autonomous community of Navarre, or Navarra in Spanish, extends from the central Pyrenees, on the border with France, to the banks of the Ebro river. A neighbor of the famous Rioja, the wine region of Navarre boasts many wineries that you can visit for a tasting, scattered across sceneries that range from lush green rolling hills to the arid south.

While the region was once most famous for its traditional rosés, during your wine tastings in Navarra you will have the opportunity to taste red, white, and rosé wines of excellent quality. This is also thanks to the Navarra Viticulture and Oenological Research Station, which has been undertaking research and training in viticulture and winemaking, contributing to the development of one of Spain’s most diverse DOs. The Navarra DO, established in 1933, is the only designation found in Navarre and covers the entire southern half of the region.

Which food to taste in Navarre?

When visiting the wineries of Navarra, you will often be offered some local tapas (pintxos) or regional delicacies to accompany your tasting. We also recommend indulging in the local cuisine, which, thanks to the region’s geography, boasts mouthwatering dishes like peppers stuffed with codfish, artichokes with clams, lamb al chilindrón, and white beans with chistorra, but also PDO certified food specialties, like Navarre’s veal and white asparagus.

Which wines to taste in Navarre?

During your winery visits in Navarre, you will come across both native and international grape varieties. The most widespread white grape varieties found in Navarre include Viura, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca, and Moscatel de Grano Menudo, while the black grape varieties include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Graciano, and Mazuelo.

Which is the best season to visit Navarre?

Wine tastings and winery visits in Navarra can be organized throughout the seasons. Thanks to its diverse sceneries, Navarra can be appreciated at any moment of the year: when covered in snow during winter, when tinged with warm colors during fall, or when livened by the summer festivals.
