Adega do Mestre Daniel - XXVI Talhas
About the Winery
The winery "Adega do Mestre Daniel" is located in Vila Alva within the Vidigueira region in the southern part of Alentejo. It is a century-old cellar full of antique clay pots called "talhas" in the Portuguese language, which date back to 1673. The cellar was owned by António Daniel Tabaquinho dos Santos known as Mestre Daniel, who worked as a carpenter and produced Talha Wine for almost 30 years in this cellar. After his death, the winery stayed closed until 2018 when the project "XXVI TALHAS" was created. The project aims to continue with the tradition of Talha Wine and maintain the legacy that the Romans left in the region more than 2000 years ago.
About the Wines
Adega do Mestre Daniel exclusively produces Talha Wine (vinho de talha), a wine made in antique clay pots in an artisanal winemaking process left by the Romans more than 2000 years ago. A tradition that was passed from generation to generation without significant changes. The wine stays for at least 2.5 months with skin contact in the talha, and only at St. Martin's Day on November 11th does the wine get racked.
We have two ranges of wines: our entry-level range is the Tareco Wine (white, red, and clarete), which represents the new Talha Wine, and the intermediate range is the Mestre Daniel Wine (white and red), which represents the traditional Talha Wine.
The Tareco Wines are young wines that spend 2.5 months in the talha in contact with the "mother". The Mestre Daniel Wines are the result of careful selection and spend 6 months in the talha in contact with the "mother".
Furthermore, we have a Talha Wine XXVI, which stays for 6 months with skin contact in the talha and another 12 months in a talha protected by a layer of olive oil.
