ADEGA DOS LEÕES
About the Winery
ADEGA DOS LEÕES is a small, family-run winery that has been producing exclusively red wine for over a century. Today, it is registered with the Vinho Verde Wine Region Viticulture Commission, producing DOC wines from the Basto sub-region.
The Adega dos Leões properties are the remaining part of one of the largest farms in the region and a family that dates back to 1566. At the end of the 19th century, the then-owner remodeled the main house and built advanced equipment for the time, wine presses, a warehouse, and a still, in order to get the best results from agricultural activity and produce one of the best wines in the region.
The multi-hundred-year-old family ended in 2023 with the death of its last direct member, D. Margarida Vasconcelos. The current owners were born and raised on the farm, being the legatees of a centuries-old tradition.
About the Wines
The wines of Adega dos Leões are traditional red wines produced naturally, without the addition of chemicals or oenological manipulation. Made exclusively from the Vinhão grape variety, they are intense, structured wines that faithfully represent the winemaking heritage of the region.
They are distinguished by their deep ruby-red color and expressive aromas of fresh red fruits. On the palate, they are well-structured, with a moderate tannic presence that gives them character and personality. Clear and youthful, with medium aromatic intensity, these are gastronomic wines designed to pair beautifully with the rich traditional cuisine of Minho.
They complement dishes such as roasted meats, grilled sardines, chicken giblet rice, lamprey, Portuguese stew (cozido à portuguesa), blood sausage, and many other regional specialties.
Authentic and distinctive, these wines – crafted through natural fermentation – carry centuries of winemaking history in every glass.
