About Winery and Wines

Quality wines are produced in Jerez from Tartesian and Fenisian times. Rome was a great consumer of Jerez wines. Later on, all North Sea countries, particularly England, imported Jerez Wines. At the beginning of XVII Century Shakespeare made Sir Falstaff say: “If I had a thousand sons, the first humane principle I would teach them should be to forswear thin potations and to addict themselves to sack (Jerez wine)”. The Palomino wine was introduced in Jerez from Germany late in the XVII century. It produces wine of moderate alcoholic content that must be fortified with brandy to preserve its stability. This is how Sherry is produced today. Miguel Domecq is a member of a seven generation family of quality wine producers. It began in 1730 when Jean Haurie, a Frenchman, established a winery in Jerez, later on, renominated Pedro Domecq. It developed during Centuries. When the business was sold by the family in 1994, it was the world leading brandy and sherry producer and one of the largest world wine and liquor producers. Like his father, grandfather and other ancestors before him, Miguel Domecq was for 25 years a member of the Executive Committee of Pedro Domecq, where he gathered a wide experience in winemaking throughout Europe and America. Miguel Domecq is bringing back the old Jerez tradition of producing table wines on the famous Albariza soil, well known for its quality wine production. After careful research he planted a vineyard in 2003 at Cortijo de Torrecera, with the most suitable vine varieties for table wine production in our terroir. Some years after he began to produce quality table wines.

The CORTIJO DE TORRECERA vineyard is located on albariza soil, the famous terroir of Jerez, on the slopes of the Tower Hill and next to the winery. Has an extension of 32 Ha (72 Acres). Main vine varietals are CHARDONNAY for white wines, and TEMPRANILLO, MERLOT, SYRAH and CABERNET SAUVIGNON for red wines. There are also small extensions of Petit Verdot, Tintilla de Rota and Sauvignon Blanc. In selecting the vine varietals we profited from the long experience of the Jerez Public Enology Center followed by a careful consideration. To obtain best quality and aroma concentration we leave in the vines only the grapes they can ripe with top quality by cutting early the rest of bunches. We harvest at nighttime when no sun can reach the grapes and temperature is lowest. Transport time is very short because the winery is next to the vineyard. This way to operate would be impossible if you are not the vineyard owner because it results in a decrease of production and a cost increase no independent vineyard owner would accept. An excellent quality and personality of the grapes reaching the winery is our award.
