Bodegas Privilegio del Condado
(Winery in Andalusia)
Although the history of Wine County officially written from 1955, of its wines and winemakers started much earlier. The wines of the region of Condado de Huelva are different for more than six centuries.
Brave wines, that sailed with Columbus to the New World, and centuries later helped to save the fate of bollulleros farmers. The lands of Bollullos par del Condado were divided into small plots. Growers in the region contrasted with the large landowners who traditionally dominated the Andalusian countryside. Small winegrowers were victims of abuses of the great winemakers and grape sold at very low prices imposed by buyers.
Time passed and farmers increasingly produced more and better quality grapes but were subject to the great economic game. The year was 1953 and the bollulleros winemakers were to face an event without knowing definitively change this untenable situation. That year was magnificent. Grape production was so high that the vendimiar found themselves without enough to store all the fruits harvested space. They had to go to the old disused ponds lots and houses. Bollullos people remember that event as the "year of the pools".
In this situation, small vintners became aware of the precariousness of their situation and decide to join together cooperatively to put solution to your problem: facing the winemakers of equals. Thus is born BODEGA COOPERATIVA VINÍCOLA DEL CONDADO, and farmers together, began to compete in the market as large. County wine born with the spirit of solidarity and common struggle for a dream: the fair distribution of the wine business. An ideal that is reflected in its wines, possessing the wisdom of the people dressed with the cooperative dream.
Bodegas Robles
(Winery in Andalusia)
"Over 75 years ago my grandfather, Antonio José, started coming to Montilla Moriles in search of the best wine grapes he could find. Together with his wife Pilar, he became intimately familiar with the excellent vineyards "la Toledana", "el Canillo", "Cabriñana" and "Cañada del Navarro", located in Sierra de Montilla, one of our best production areas.
They founded Bodegas Robles in 1927 and my family has since produced wine archieving many prestigious prizes and increasingly worldwide recognitizion.
Without the vision of Antonio José and Pilar, the quality that Bodegas Robles has since archived would not have been possible. Of course, it takes more than great grapes to make great wines. You need a great winery and that´s where my father, Francisco Robles, has been so important.
He introduced the current presses system and imported the American oak botas (butts). In fact, Dad helped to make fine winemaking at Bodegas Robles what it is today, a place where artisan techniques work hand in hand with state-of-the-art technology.
With so much of Montilla and winemaking in our blood, it seems only natural that my brother Francis, my sister Marisa and I would keep working, developing and making wine nowadays.
Our parents and grandparents have taught us to respect our traditions and environment as the starting point to build our own future.
Today, this principle guides every aspect of our winemaking at Bodegas Robles.
Williams & Humbert
(Winery in Andalusia)
Bodegas Williams & Humbert is located in the geographical triangle formed by the cities of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. This triangle has a unique microclimate owing to the influences of the Guadalquivir and Guadalete rivers, giving rise to the term “the Mesopotamian valley of western Andalusia”.
At present, Williams & Humbert is comprised of the central installations (Europe’s largest wine cellar), the vineyards and Sovisur, their distributing company in Spain.
The family have handed down longstanding winemaking traditions and sales expertise in international markets from one generation to another.
Two different generations currently work side by side with prestigious professionals, comprising a dynamic, energetic team with a great deal of business initiative while maintaining the traditions and knowledge acquired through a century and a half of experience in Jerez.
Bodegas Williams & Humbert now sell their products in over 80 countries and they are developing an ambitious diversification project in the sector of high quality food products. The firm’s subsidiary company SOVISUR distributes their products – the Canasta and Dry Sack Sherries and the Gran Duque de Alba brandy amongst the most prominent – throughout Spain. The diversification has additionally led them to add products from other quality demarcations such as Ribera del Duero (Marqués de Polavieja red wines), Rioja (Viña Paul and Peñazola red wines), Rueda (Viña Saltés) and Albariño (Espírito da Terra).
Their innovative projects also include Crema de Alba, the world’s only cream liqueur made from Solera Gran Reserva Jerez brandy and the rums Dos Maderas and Malabar, products that merge two cultures and which are made with a double ageing process.
The firm’s recent entrance in the food sector with the Medina del Encinar brand, comprising pure sheep’s-milk cheese and Iberian pork products, has enjoyed significant success.
Bodegas Almijara
(Winery in Andalusia)
BODEGAS ALMIJARA started making wine in 1993 with the production of the now well-known VINOS JAREL, and in the year 2000 our Denominations of Origin Malaga and Sierra de Malaga were awarded.
Since then and up to the present day, we have worked year after year to improve quality and consistency. We are dedicated to ensuring that our wines are a modern expression of the grape tradition of this area, by using the most modern technology available. The muscatel grape serves as an essential, indisputable sign of our culture.
The BodegasAlmijara`s origins go back to the 19th century when the building started life as a “ La Resinera”, a factory producing resin. It is still known as such by some of the older villagers. The factory continued as such until the years of the Spanish Civil War.
Then people began picking muscatel grapes for the production of raisins. This raisin production still continues today, but in a much reduced form.
Many years later, somewhere near the 70s, it would turn into a Bodega, but it was not until the year 1993 that “Bodegas Almijara” was consolidated into a business.
Finca Ánfora SL
(Winery in Andalusia)
In search of a virgin spot with a certain microclimate, predestined for winegrowing and having the vision of creating a wine of excellent quality in mind, we decided after having searched for a long time in favour of the region surrounding Almería. Here we found an up to then unused but marvellous potential for creating a wine of unique taste.
In 1995 we founded FINCA ANFORA and planted the vines on terrain that had been used for viticulture ever since but eventually had almost sunk into oblivion. Thereby we could revitalise an old tradition.
The construction of FINCA ANFORA turned out to be difficult and very protracted. First of all we were obliged to remove the stratum in order to reach the fertile layer underneath, followed by shifting and dispersing the mould, so that the vines could find nutritious soil for prospering. To prevent soil erosion we built tremendous walls with our bare hands, using the removed natural stone. Thus a terrace-like construction was formed on which the water could optimally be dispersed and used.
