About Winery and Wines
Located in the backyard of a traditional Castilian house in Quintanilla de Arriba, Valladolid, Sarmentero traces its origins to 1942, when the property was acquired. Originally one of the town’s three miller houses, it later became dedicated to tile production, cattle breeding, and farming, alongside small-scale wine production for personal use. The family’s long-standing vine-growing tradition passed down through generations, instilled a deep knowledge and passion for winemaking. In 2004, fourth-generation winemaker Amparo Repiso fulfilled her dream by starting the winery with just one barrel of wine. As the wine’s success grew, so did the production. In 2013, a new building was constructed to improve efficiency while honoring the ancestral winemaking spirit that defines Sarmentero.
Sarmentero is located in the heart of Ribera del Duero, where the vineyards grow entirely on chalky-clay soils and are planted exclusively with Tempranillo. The winery practices sustainable viticulture, ensuring that the environment and the raw materials—grapes and vines—are carefully nurtured. Two key vineyards form the foundation of the wines: Pago de Oyales (12.3 acres, planted in 1996) and Peñuelas (5 acres, planted in 2002), both planted with 100% Tempranillo.
Sarmentero offers a variety of wines, each expressing the unique characteristics of the terroir:
Sarmentero Roble: Aged for 5 months in American and French oak, it is a smooth, medium-bodied red with red fruit and oaky notes.
Sarmentero Vendimia Seleccionada: Aged for 12 months in French oak, it delivers rich cherry flavors and licorice with a balanced, silky finish.
Sarmentero Barrica: Aged for 18 months in French oak, it features intense aromas of black cherries, licorice, and dark chocolate.
Sarmentero GR: Limited edition with only two barrels, aged for 26 months in French oak, offering complex aromas of black cherries, dry fruit, and cocoa.
In addition to reds, Sarmentero also produces:
Sarmentero Verdejo: A fresh white wine with citrus, pear, and floral notes, perfect for pairing with seafood and light dishes.
Sarmentero Rosado: A dry rosé made from 100% Tempranillo, with a refreshing bouquet of strawberries and raspberries, ideal for warm afternoons and light meals.
