About Winery and Wines

Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón S.A. was founded in 1999 by the joining of three bodegas within the Denominación de Origen Calatayud and with the participation of the Government of Aragón, through the Instituto Aragonés de Fomento and four Aragonese financial institutions - Ibercaja, CAI, Multicaja and Cajalón. Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón S.A. was created to develop the grape growing, wine production and commercialization of bottles wines, both young wines and crianzas, from the three bodegas. The three bodegas were founded in the 1960’s, to process the grape of 34 municipalities of the 67 having the district of Calatayud. Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón S.A was founded to provide the dynamism and enterprise that was needed in the Denominación de Origen Calatayud to strengthen its position in the market, and to be the driving force in developing new practices in viticulture and viniculture, while remaining faithful to the region’s traditions. Quality, professionalism and ambition, together with attention to detail, have been the key to rediscovering the tradition and potential of the region of Calatayud. Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón S.A. has over 650 hectares of vineyard, that constitutes around of 20% of the Denominación de Calatayud. Quality is all important. Striking a balance between tradition and technology, our team of young professionals are open to innovation and advances, in search of ways of raising quality. With a deep knowledge of tradition and the force of human endeavor and technology – as much in the vineyards as in the bodegas – our wines meet the changing needs of the market. Our wines have not only been recognized in the Spanish market, but have found successful export markets around the globe. The United Kingdom, United States of America, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and Brazil , have all become important markets for the wines of Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón S.A.

Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón has 650 hectares (1600 acres) of vineyard, concentrated in the southern part of the Calatayud region. Our vineyards extend from the River Jalón to the north, deep into the Systema Ibérico mountain range to the south, and are centred on the river valley of the Jiloca. Our vineyards are situated at altitudes of between 600 and over 1000 metres (2000 – 3300 feet), with the higher sites dominated by Old-Vine Garnacha and the lower sites by Tempranillo. Of the more than 1000 hectares of Garnacha that we have in production, more than half are Viñas Viejas, planted more than 40 years ago. These low yielding vineyards are our “jewel in the crown”, providing consistently outstanding fruit, year after year, and forming the basis for many of our best wines. Our 400 hectares of Tempranillo, planted on the lower slopes, in soils of finer texture, provides the backbone for many of our Crianza wines. The structure and aging ability of our Tempranillo wines make them ideally suited to being matured in oak barrels, both for traditional Reserva and for more modern varietal styles. Ever since we first planted Syrah, in 1990, we have been convinced that this noble Rhone variety has a great future in Calatayud. We now have 130 hectares, planted on our poorest soils to reduce the variety’s natural vigour, with more coming into production every year.
