Lovely Winery Tour

Rate: 5 out of 5 9/1/25
Jacques was a terrific tour guide who showed us the winery, the tanks, and the storage areas. We also got to watch parts of the harvest, as we were there in mid-September. He was very knowledgeable about the local area and helped serve our delicious lunch. I would recommend this tour for anyone who wants to try unique grape varietals that you won't often find when looking for Italian grapes. We got to try some truly unique wines (some better than others), which was great for expanding my overall wine knowledge.

Ottima spiegazione della cantina, degustazione di livello accompagnata da prodotti locali. Onestamente difficile chiedere di meglio!

About Winery and Wines

Cantina Le Macchie is a family-run winery located in the hills of Castelfranco, at the foot of Mount Terminillo in Lazio. Founded in 2009 by Antonio Di Carlo, the estate was born from a passion for reviving the area’s historic winemaking traditions. Today, it combines artisanal methods with modern techniques to produce wines that express the character of the mountain terroir. The high-altitude vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate that enhances freshness, structure, and aromatic intensity. Sustainability and respect for nature are at the heart of the winery’s philosophy.

Cantina Le Macchie offers a diverse portfolio of wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Rieti hills, blending indigenous and international grape varieties. Here's an overview of their notable wines:

Indigenous Varietals

L’Ultimo Baluardo: A pure Cesanese Nero, this wine undergoes a 100-day fermentation with malolactic fermentation on the skins, followed by 18 months in French oak barrels. It boasts aromas of fresh cherries, balsamic notes of juniper, myrtle, and bay leaf, with a fresh and mineral palate.

Il Bandolo della Matassa: A rosé crafted from Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, recognized for its floral and fruity aromas, and a palate that combines freshness and sapidity with smooth tannins.

Se Bo Be Bi: A late-harvest passito made from Malvasia Puntinata, offering notes of dried apricot, plum, and hints of saffron, resulting in a fresh and delicately sweet wine.

International Varietals

Vigna il Cerqueto: A Merlot that undergoes 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, delivering a structured and elegant profile.

Scarpe Toste: A Gewürztraminer known for its aromatic complexity, with fermentation at controlled temperatures and aging on lees to enhance its bouquet.

Riesling: This wine exhibits aromas of ripe white fruit and freshly cut grass, with a dry, fresh, and persistent palate.

Conubium: A Malvasia Lazio IGT produced from old vines at 650 meters above sea level, offering aromatic freshness with notes of herbs, citrus, and white flowers.

Cantina Le Macchie’s wines are a testament to their commitment to quality and the expression of their unique terroir, combining traditional practices with innovative techniques.
