About Winery and Wines

Since 1983, Cascina Gilli gives value to native vine varieties from the Monferrato area, above all to Freisa a polyhedric and contemporary type of vine. Our winery is located in Castelnuovo Don Bosco, in the Monferrato Astigiano area, one of the few in Piedmont still waiting to be discovered and explored, though always proud and independent, with a strong history.  We grow 5 different types of vines – Freisa, Malvasia from Schierano, Bonarda, Barbera and Nebbiolo – on 11 hectares of clay hills, among the clay hills in the Marne di Sant’Agata.

After 40 years of activity, we decided to evolve. Paolo Vergnano, son of the winery founder Gianni, own the property now with two new business partners, Davide Gasperini e Federico Mussetto. A new team with new skills to highlight a region and its native vine varieties, while also preserving an historical site: a farm from the 1700s. A chance to merge Innovation and culture. Two of our most iconic wines are: Freisa d’Asti DOC, sophisticated, elegant, fragrant, and Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco DOC, aromatic and timeless. These wines, today, are the result of a peculiar production philosophy, centred on the importance of preserving and enhancing the native wine heritage.

We grow 5 different types of vines – Freisa, Malvasia from Schierano, Bonarda, Barbera and Nebbiolo.

From freisa grapes we produce three different labels, one sparkling, one still and one aged in wooden barriques.

Malvasia can be tasted in two versions: the first is a typically sweet wine, perfect with desserts; the second one, an aromathic spumante, perfect for an aperitif.

Bonarda is a classic kind of wine in Piedmont, especially in its sparkling version. We also produce a rosè label made of this variety mixed with Freisa.

Lastly, we have our Notturno, a 100% nebbiolo made from the Albugnano variety.
