About Winery and Wines

Château Canon Chaigneau has a long history, with wine first being cultivated on the rich land in Roman times, nearly 2,000 years ago. More recently, Romik Arconian, the London-born wine merchant, with his partner Marine & their young family, took over Canon Chaigneau in 2020, with the ambition of making it a leader in the appellation & whole region (though the wines were already pretty damn good!).

The terroir of 21 hectares of clay & limestone with iron deposits, at the highest point of the Néac plateau, and in the continuity of the most prestigious part of the Pomerol plateau, neighboring the Greats of Pomerol. As Decanter magazine says, the plateau is, '...essentially a continuation of that of Pomerol itself, and the majority of the best crus of Lalande are found in this corner of the appellation.’

The estate's winemaker Thierry Garnaud was the winemaker of neighbouring Château Cheval Blanc for 38 years. He knows this terroir perfectly and knows not only how to sublimate its exceptional qualities, but also how to express its unique identity. He shares our ambition, to do our utmost to produce a wine that is both authentic and of remarkable quality. Our goal is to make Canon Chaigneau a wine of reference and a leader in an appellation that has been somewhat underestimated until now. True to his values and past, Thierry makes soft, fine, rich wines that are balanced, with beautiful aromatic complexity, typically with notes of truffle, spices, cocoa and black fruits.

The estate's wine is produced in accordance with ‘Agriculture Raisonnée', its poise and equilibrium via its blend that gives pride of place to Merlot (92%), the king grape variety of this Pomerolese terroir, Cabernet Franc (5%), another reference of this area, & Pressac (3%) for its flamboyant and spicy notes. Its wine is noted for its elegance, finesse, and delicacy due to the moderate extraction and maturation process that respects the identity and inherent opulence of each vintage. Striving to enhance & also to preserve this magnificent terroir, Chateau Canon Chaigneau is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) level 3. They are committed to organic practices for the coming vintages.
