5 An afternoon of tasting beneath the trees (Vicky)Around half an hour’s drive east of Blaye, Château Lapourcaud dates back to 1883 but has been recently revived to its former glory by owner-vigneron Vincent Gas. Under normal circumstances, Vincent would have got us involved in the vineyard: learning about the process by doing a little pruning or harvesting. But Mother Nature had other ideas, with temperatures soaring into the mid-30s, demanding we find shade after about ten minutes. Not to worry: in the château’s gardens, we sat beneath the trees and enjoyed a tasting of six different bottles, alongside a multitude of local cheeses, foie gras and magret de canard. My personal favourite was Château Lapourcaud’s own 2023 blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which was bright and light on its feet. But we also tasted Vincent’s brother’s white and red blends from just down the road, as well as some other wines from the local cooperative of which Château Lapourcaud is a member. If I could pick one tasting note that carried through every wine we tried, it would be: “peppery” – which says something about the region’s terroir. I’m already a planning a second visit, and next time I hope it’ll be cool enough to do a little work in the vineyard!

5 Amazing tour, so welcoming and informative! (Megan)We had an amazing tour, it ended up just being the two of us as we went out of season but it meant that it felt even more personal walking around the beautiful property and vineyards. We also booked the wine and chocolate option and felt that the flavours and notes of the wines and how they paired with each chocolate was very interesting. Of course, we had to buy a bottle to drink later! We would love to come back during the warmer months.

5 Very good wines and lovely hosts (David)My partner and I had a lovely tour and wine tasting with Mickael and Valerie. It lasted c. 1 hour. We enjoyed the tour of the wine storage and preparation, and had a tasting of 6 wines through a corovin, which were all excellent. We bought a bottle (only one because of difficulties with transporting back home) and when we had issues with our taxi they made us feel very welcome whilst we waited even though it was clearly past closing time - thanks.

5 Winetastic (Anna)Me and me friend booked a tour to try 3 wines and 3 cheeses paired with each wine. The experience was even better than i thought. Firstly it was only us on the tour and tour guide Jessica was very lovely person. She showed us around the château and we found out so much interesting information about wine making, not even for one minute it felt boring. In the end we had fun trying the 3 lovely wines all equally enjoyable. The cheeses were also delicious. Without a doubt i would recommend this tour and this place. First reason i picked it is because it was easier to reach without a car compared to other places, also that the price was decent. But after the tour i was even more delighted that it was better than expected and there was no need to go far. So i would highly recommend.

We were welcomed by Filippo in his "chateau", which has little of a castle, but the passion he conveyed makes up for, and even surpasses, this lack. He explained all the phases of production to us, he had us taste the two promised wines. Beyond the visit itself, I think it's really pleasant to get to know Filippo, because he is an interesting person, who reinvented himself from scratch and for this reason alone is to be highly esteemed.
