About Winery and Wines

Château Puybarbe, a centuries-old estate in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, transitioned to Finnish ownership by Riku and Anna Väänänen between 2015 and 2018. Nestled on one of the highest hills in the region, east of the Gironde River, the estate benefits from its prime location and rich calcareous-clay soils. The respect for nature and passion for wine run deep within the family, winemaker, and the entire team, ensuring the production of high-quality, modern Bordeaux-style wines. Château Puybarbe stands out not only for its traditional winemaking but also for its commitment to sustainable practices. The estate has earned the prestigious HVE (High Environmental Value) certification, using no herbicides or chemical fertilizers, and promoting biodiversity and soil health. Visitors can experience not only the beauty of the estate but also the exceptional dedication to the craft of winemaking, as each bottle tells the story of the vineyard, the weather, and the land, year after year.

Château Puybarbe specializes in producing award-winning red wines and a superior rosé from its 41-hectare vineyard in the Côtes de Bourg appellation. With a focus on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard is planted on a south-sloping plateau, offering excellent sun exposure. The vines, averaging 30 years of age, are carefully managed using sustainable practices, including natural weed growth and microbial life promotion. The estate prides itself on low-yield, high-quality grape production (35-40 hl/ha) and traditional double Guyot pruning techniques. Each wine reflects the unique terroir and the dedication of the team, with many receiving high scores from Decanter World Wine Awards and Wine Enthusiast. Consulting by renowned oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt further ensures the quality and character of each vintage, establishing Château Puybarbe as one of the premier producers in the region.
