About Winery and Wines
La Gerla was founded in 1976 from the passion of Sergio Rossi, a successful businessman in advertising, who fell in love with this both bitter and sweet territory and became almost a true local, loving his vineyards as if they were his children.
The estate, which had the typical local name of Colombaio, belonged to the Biondi Santi family, which achieved one of the best Brunello of the area from this 3 hectars vineyard. Sergio Rossi bought the property and completely restructured it, respecting its original environment.
He was among the 24 founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium in 1980, when Brunello received DOCG status.
The property extends over a total of 15 hectares, including 11.5 hectares of vineyards, divided into 6 hectares in the "Canalicchio" area (North-East) and 5.5 hectares in Castelnuovo dell’Abate (South-East). The grape variety grown exclusively is Sangiovese Grosso, which in Montalcino is known as Brunello.
In the northeast vineyards, the soil is medium-textured, medium-deep to deep, with abundant gravel (galestro), moderately calcareous, and a good percentage of silt. The cool, dry microclimate in summer allows for slow and progressive ripening, which fosters the development of elegant, intense, and noble aromas in the wine.
To the south, the soil type changes, with a predominantly sandy-loam texture, predominantly gravelly. The limestone component is also significant, as is the sun's rays, which are enhanced by the unique location, sheltered from the coldest north winds and salty west-southwest winds. With these unique characteristics, the grapes ripen optimally, thanks in part to the significant temperature range between day and night. The wines we produce from the vineyards in this area are powerful and structured, yet refined and intense, absolutely unmistakable.
The Terroir of Montalcino is extremely rich in soil types, a treasure trove of diversity and resources for the winemaker. At La Gerla, it was decided to plant the vineyards in two opposite areas of the Montalcino hill, so different but complementary; from the vinification of whose grapes, unique products with unmistakable characteristics are obtained.
All La Gerla's wines are produced with 100% Sangiovese grosso (Brunello) grapes and come from our vineyards, which ensures a strong bond with the territory and unique products.
Even the Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Grappa are the fruit of our work and provide a beautiful backdrop to the offer of the main products.
