About Winery and Wines

In 2017, we embarked on a journey to revive a piece of history by purchasing an old stone house alongside six hectares of vineyards, olive trees, and woodland in the picturesque municipality of Castel Giorgio (TR), on the edge of the Alfina plateau. This stunning volcanic plateau, situated at an altitude of approximately 550 meters above sea level, spans the borders of Umbria, Lazio, and Tuscany, offering a unique terroir that we are proud to cultivate.

Our "casa agricola" is dedicated to organic farming across 4.5 hectares of vineyards, of which 1.5 hectares are owned and the remainder rented. We embrace traditional practices with modern sustainability by planting new vines through massal selection and maintaining an ancient "married vineyard," where vines coexist harmoniously with fruit trees and other native plants. The primary varieties we grow include Procanico, Drupeggio, Verdello, Malvasia for our whites, and Sangiovese for our reds.

Our winemaking philosophy is centered around minimal intervention—spontaneous fermentations, no filtering or clarifications, and zero additives. Each harvest, beginning in late August and concluding in late September, is conducted entirely by hand, ensuring that only the healthiest grapes make it to our cellar. At La Malauva, we are creating a small, diverse ecosystem where vineyards, olive trees, vegetable gardens, and animals interact to produce food and wine in a way that respects nature and honors tradition.

At La Malauva, our wines are a direct reflection of the volcanic soils and traditional grape varieties of our region. We currently produce six distinctive wines, each crafted with a deep respect for the land and minimal intervention in the cellar.

Tierra: This white wine is born from a 40-year-old vineyard located in Orvieto. It is composed primarily of Procanico (70%) with Drupeggio, Verdello, and Malvasia rounding out the blend. The grapes undergo a brief maceration before pressing, with fermentation and aging occurring in steel tanks.

Rosarella: A rosé wine produced from the same vineyard as Tierra. The must from white grapes is passed over the skins of Sangiovese during the final stage of fermentation, lending a unique character to the wine. Fermentation and aging take place in steel tanks.

Rebelle Mariage: A sparkling wine from a young vineyard planted using grafting techniques to ensure strong, productive vines. The wine undergoes direct pressing and primary fermentation in steel, with a secondary fermentation in the bottle initiated by adding must from a late harvest. No disgorgement is performed.

Malauva Bianco: Sourced from an 80-year-old married vineyard, this white wine is made predominantly from Procanico (80%), with Drupeggio, Verdello, and Malvasia completing the blend. The grapes are macerated on their skins before being pressed and fermented in steel tanks.

Malauva Rosato: A Sangiovese rosé from a 40-year-old vineyard on clayey soils. Most of the grapes are pressed immediately, with a small portion left on the skins until fermentation is complete. The wine is vinified and aged in steel.

Osarella: A red wine named after the hamlet where the vineyard is located, Osarella is made from Sangiovese grapes grown on clayey soils rich in fossil shells. The grapes are macerated on their skins throughout fermentation, with a portion macerated as whole clusters, before aging in steel tanks.

Each of our wines is a testament to our commitment to organic farming, traditional methods, and the vibrant expression of our local terroir.
