About Winery and Wines

Established in 1996, Terralsole is translated to “Land Toward the Sun”. It is the inspiration of Mario Bollag and his wife Athena, two artists who combine their love for painting and music with their passion for fine winemaking. The estate’s 12 hectares (30 acres) of vineyards echo this harmony. For over 20 years, Mario Bollag has produced award-wining Brunello by following his principles and artistic vision. This vision led him to purchase and cultivate two distinct terroirs in Montalcino, using as his palette a blend of soils, vineyard aspects and microclimates as the medium to create the ultimate expression of Brunello di Montalcino. By carefully pairing the perfect root stock with Montalcino’s unique terroirs, we take great pride crafting our 100% Sangiovese Brunello and Rosso as well as 3 IGT Varietals. We also release a Brunello di Montalcino RISERVA in exceptional vintages. All our wines are 100% estate grown with the utmost care and attention. Natural viticulture, including organic fertilizers and cover crops is the philosophy of the estate. And in 2015 we applied for Organic Certification. While there’s plenty of arm wrestling over the “best” terroir on the hill of Montalcino, what matters to us is the harmony we find in the bottle. A great Brunello di Montalcino is above all an elegant wine, one that effortlessly combines the seductive perfumes of pure Sangiovese Grosso, with a supple core of sweet fruit, producing a complete and balanced wine. The Pian Bossolino vineyards surround the Spectacular Villa Terralsole and winery, sitting high on the southeastern slope of Montalcino, behind Biondi Santi. The soil consists of mixed marl, large limestone and metamorphic composites. Pian Bossolino has gentle, even slopes 1,200 feet above sea level and enjoys cooler weather and excellent ventilation. This situation allows Sangiovese Grosso to ripen evenly and slowly, providing expressive aromas and spice in the wine.

Our guiding principal here at Terralsole is: Great wine is made in the vineyards, not the Cantina. With this in mind, Sangiovese Grosso was planted in 1996 on specifically chosen clonal selections and rootstocks dedicated to the soil types and vigor levels of our different terroirs, their aspect, and average diurnal temperatures.
